The Prestigious English Greyhound Derby 2024
A Rich History, Dates and Ticket Information
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious event in British greyhound racing. It boasts a history that stretches back to 1927. This race, which is held annually, has seen many legendary greyhounds and trainers make their mark, and it continues to be a highlight of the racing calendar to this day.
The Early Years at White City Stadium
The English Greyhound Derby was first held at White City Stadium, which had been constructed for the 1908 London Olympics. Greyhound racing was a relatively new phenomenon at the time, with the first race at White City occurring just weeks before the inaugural Derby. Entry Badge won the first Derby, earning a £1,000 prize for trainer Joe Harmon. In 1929, the legendary Mick the Miller became the first greyhound to win the Derby multiple times.
Transition to Wimbledon Stadium
In 1985, the Derby moved to Wimbledon Stadium. This period saw the rise of remarkable greyhounds and trainers. Spillers pet food company began sponsoring the race in 1973, increasing the prize money significantly. The Daily Mirror took over sponsorship in 1983, and Whisper Wishes won the last Derby held at White City in 1984.
Legendary Greyhounds
Only four greyhounds have won the English Greyhound Derby twice: Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger, and Westmead Hawk. These greyhounds have left an indelible mark on the sport’s history.
Record-Breaking Trainers
Charlie Lister OBE holds the record for the most Derby wins by a trainer, with an impressive seven victories. His success has earned him the title of the 'Derby King' with a reputation as the greatest greyhound trainer of all time.
From Wimbledon to Towcester
The closure of Wimbledon Stadium in 2016 marked the end of an era. The Derby moved to Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, marking the first time the event was held outside of London.
Nottingham Interlude and Return to Towcester
Following the closure of Towcester Racecourse in 2018, the Derby was temporarily relocated to Nottingham Greyhound Stadium in 2019. Despite challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic which caused the postponement of the 2020 event, the Derby found its way back to a reopened Towcester in 2021.
