Tesco Raises Meal Deal Prices
Tesco has upped the price of its popular meal deal to £3.85 for Clubcard holders and £4.25 without — its third price rise since 2022. The premium version now costs £5.50 with a Clubcard and £6 without. While Tesco insists the deal still offers “great value,” many shoppers aren't convinced.
The increase comes amid a broader trend of rising food costs, with UK inflation figures showing a 4.9% rise in food and drink prices over the past year. Heatwaves across Europe and higher business costs at home have driven prices up further. Tesco, along with over 60 other major retailers, has warned Chancellor Rachel Reeves that new taxes could push prices even higher, making it harder to “absorb the cost pressures” without passing them on to shoppers.
Despite the criticism, Tesco claims customers still save money on certain combinations, with some totalling more than £8 if bought separately. But shoppers say the rising price, along with the addition of “fancy options” like konbini rolls and smoothies, has changed the deal’s appeal. As one Reddit user put it, “Once you throw in multi-fruit smoothies, exotic fruit pots and freshly made coffees, clearly that can’t remain below £4 for long.”
