King Haakon VIII Ascends Norwegian Throne Following Death of King Harald V

Following the death of his father, King Harald V, King Haakon VIII has officially ascended the throne to become Norway's fourth modern monarch.

During an extraordinary cabinet session, the 53-year-old sovereign announced his royal title and adopted his father's historic motto, "Everything for Norway". With his accession, his 22-year-old daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, becomes the Crown Princess and heir apparent, putting her on path to become the country's first female head of state since the 15th century.

While the new king has frequently served as regent during his father's prolonged health battles, his reign begins at a challenging moment for the Scandinavian nation's constitutional monarchy. Support for the royal house, while still holding a majority, has dropped from 81% in 2017 to 68% in recent polling following a series of high-profile family controversies.

A Reluctant Royal Who Found Peace on the Waves

In his 2023 autobiography Haakon, the king admitted that he struggled to come to terms with his royal destiny as a child attending a local state primary school during the 1980s:

"Yes, I was a royal, but I did not want to talk about it ... At school it made me anxious"

To distance himself from his public role, he chose to study political science at the University of California, Berkeley, rather than attending Oxford University like his father and grandfather. Describing his time in California, he noted that "In the water, I could be myself," adding that:

"As a grown-up, I am at my happiest in the water together with my family. It provides an inner peace when the flock is gathered to do what I like best: to be among the waves. Nothing beats that feeling."

His position as heir was formalized in 1991 following the death of his grandfather, King Olav V. Under a 1990 constitutional amendment, absolute primogeniture was introduced in Norway, though it was not applied retroactively to place his older sister, Princess Märtha Louise, ahead of him in the succession.

A Marriage That Challenged and Reshaped the Monarchy

In 1999, Haakon met Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby at a music festival. Their early relationship generated intense public debate, as Mette-Marit was a commoner and single mother with ties to Oslo's 1990s club scene.

Ahead of their 2001 wedding, Mette-Marit publicly addressed her past in an emotional interview, winning over much of the Norwegian public. Reflecting on her social strengths, Haakon wrote in his memoir:

"I am not very good socially. Mette is a natural talent. She can go into a room and get along with everyone."

Together, the couple had two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, while Haakon also served as stepfather to Mette-Marit's eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby.

In 2018, the royal family announced that Mette-Marit had been diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis. She underwent a lung transplant in June, and her medical recovery remains ongoing.

Recent Scandals Surrounding the Household

The new monarch takes office under the shadow of two recent controversies involving his immediate family.

In June, Marius Borg Høiby was convicted of domestic violence and two counts of rape, one of which occurred at Haakon's estate in Skaugum, and was sentenced to four years in prison. Høiby, who denies the charges, is appealing the ruling. Commenting on the situation during a royal engagement, Haakon stated:

"We support Marius in the situation he is in. We look after the other children as well. For me, the most important thing these past few days has been to take care of the flock."

At the same time, public scrutiny intensified after U.S. Justice Department documents released in January revealed past correspondence between Mette-Marit and deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Following a seven-week silence, Mette-Marit gave a televised interview explaining that she felt manipulated and unsafe during a 2013 meeting at Epstein's Florida residence. 

Appearing alongside her, Haakon remarked that marriage is for "the good days and the bad," emphasizing:

"Mette is caring, wise and really strong. And that's why I will always have her on the team when something difficult happens."

Separately, Princess Märtha Louise stepped back from official royal duties in 2022 following public debate over her business ventures with her husband, American shaman Durek Verrett.

Despite the recent legal and personal challenges facing the family, royal observers note that King Haakon VIII is well-prepared for his duties, having spent decades preparing for the throne. Commenting on his public service in his autobiography, the new king wrote that he had learned to embrace his royal responsibilities, saying:

"I can find meaning and joy within it, and I can try and be of help to others."
