Fresh Content Leaks Hit Grand Theft Auto 6 as Hackers Protest Digital-Only Launch

A series of unauthorized leaks has hit Rockstar Games, with a group calling itself "CyberLeek" sharing unconfirmed gameplay clips and map details from an alleged build of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The group claims the daily leaks are a protest against publisher Take-Two Interactive's decisions for the upcoming release, specifically highlighting the lack of physical discs, digital pre-orders, monetized single-player content, and the $100 price tag of the game's Ultimate Edition.

Watermarks on the videos featured messages demanding physical releases, and one clip showed protagonist Jason spelling out "LEEK" on a wall with bullet holes, suggesting the hackers hold a playable version. In a posted manifesto, the hackers threatened other studios, stating: "If CyberLeek can reach Rockstar, no one is safe."

Beyond their physical media crusade, the leakers have used the footage to promote a cryptocurrency memecoin. The tactics prompted digital preservation advocates, such as the Stop Killing Games campaign, to publicly distance themselves from the group's illegal actions, stating: "This kind of act is destructive and helps no one, worse, it risks tarnishing the reputation of our communities and our chances to make change."

The leaked clips showcase gameplay elements such as melee combat, taser mechanics, and a six-star Wanted system. However, experts point out that the material appears to be at least a year old, meaning the final release could differ substantially from the clips circulating online.

Take-Two and Rockstar have been actively issuing takedown requests across social platforms to remove the clips. The leak arrives just ahead of a scheduled extended look at the game via a Netflix partnership on August 27th, which Take-Two CEO Strauss Zenlick previously called "one of the hors d'oeuvres" of their overall marketing strategy.
