LONDON — Musical legend Sir Tom Jones has spoken out following his departure from ITV’s long-running talent competition The Voice UK, claiming television executives dropped him from the coaching panel due to "financial difficulty with insurance".
The 86-year-old Welsh crooner, who has been a staple of the red spinning chairs since the show's debut in 2012, took to social media on Tuesday afternoon to set the record straight following circulating reports of a coaching line-up overhaul.
In a candid statement, the Delilah singer rejected corporate narrative claims that his departure was a simple creative "refresh".
"To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience," Sir Tom revealed. "ITV made this decision — obviously a while ago, and I was told just recently. The reason given is because of a financial difficulty with insurance."
A Token Role Rejected
Sir Tom, who currently appears on screen in the ongoing 2026 series alongside returning coaches will.i.am, Kelly Rowland, and McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, expressed disappointment over the broadcaster's proposed compromise.
According to the veteran performer, network executives offered him a drastically reduced guest capacity rather than a full-time seat for future series.
"They now say in the press they wanted to 'refresh' the show, and with a new coaching line-up there wouldn't be a chair for me," he continued. "They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I'm not thrilled about that. So the only thing I know right now, is that there's never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who's still pretty good at his job."
The dispute marks the second time Sir Tom has been dropped from the format. He was famously axed by the BBC in 2015 before being reinstated when ITV acquired the broadcasting rights to the franchise in 2017.
A Decades-Long Legacy on the Panel
Sir Tom’s tenure on the singing contest spans over a decade, during which he mentored three contestants to overall victory: Leanne Mitchell in series one, Ruti Olajugbagbe in series seven, and Anthonia Edwards in series 11.
Reports surrounding the 2027 series suggest ITV is preparing a major panel shake-up, with British rapper Aitch and pop star Cheryl heavily rumoured to be entering negotiations to take over seats.
