South Park Satirically Rebrands as 'South America' Ahead of Season 29 Premiere

The creators of the animated comedy series South Park have announced a temporary satirical rebranding of the show to "South America" as it prepares to launch its 29th season on September 16th.
Co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone shared the announcement on social media, complete with an updated graphic replacing the word "Park" with "America." The premiere will air on Comedy Central and stream the next day on Paramount+.
In their statement, Parker and Stone took aim at both recent executive actions regarding geographic place names and the corporate response from major tech and media companies:
"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA."
"We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount - a Skydance Capitulation."
The joke responds to recent executive orders issued by President Donald Trump targeting geographic landmarks including an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in early 2025, and a recent executive order sought to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America amid trade disputes with Canada.
Following those directives, tech platforms like Google and Apple updated map labels for US-based app users, showing "Lake America" domestically while retaining "Lake Ontario" for Canadian viewers.
The show's statement also referenced recent social media posts suggesting New Mexico be renamed "New America," which drew pushback from state officials including Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who described the posts as a political distraction.
The name change comes directly on the heels of the show winning the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program for its "Sermon on the Mount" episode.
Following the ceremony, the show's official account posted an image of a fictionalized Donald Trump holding the trophy alongside the message:
"Congratulations to Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and the entire South Park team on their Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program!"
"You finally got your Emmy."
The long-running series, which debuted on August 13th, 1997, has frequently lampooned political figures and presidential administrations over its 29-season run. Previous depictions have drawn official pushback, including comments during its 27th season where White House representatives labeled the show a "fourth-rate" show that was "hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention"
The show's corporate parent, Paramount, recently navigated an $8 billion merger with Skydance alongside broader industry consolidation efforts. Whether the "South America" title remains throughout the entirety of Season 29 or reverts back to its original name later in the run has not yet been confirmed by the creators or the network.
