Voice of Mandalore: Disney Recasts Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian in Surprise Star Wars Shake-Up

LOS ANGELES — Disney and Lucasfilm have officially recast the role of Din Djarin for the franchise’s latest project, tapping veteran voice actor Gavin Hammon to replace Pedro Pascal as the title character in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian Special.

The animated special, which landed on Disney+ on Wednesday, marks the first time since the live-action series premiered in 2019 that Pascal has not provided the voice for the helmeted bounty hunter.

While news of a recasting initially sparked online panic among fan communities fearing a permanent live-action replacement, the recast applies specifically to Lucasfilm’s animated brick-building sub-universe. However, Pascal's absence stands out as a glaring anomaly given that virtually the entire original cast returned to lend their voices to the project.

A Nearly Complete Reunion

The animated special offers a light-hearted, comedic retelling of key storylines across all three seasons of The Mandalorian.

Despite the shift in tone, Lucasfilm successfully reunited almost all of the flagship show's major live-action stars for the voice booth. Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand), Emily Swallow (The Armorer), and Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka Tano) all reprised their iconic roles alongside supporting favourites Bill Burr and Amy Sedaris.

Taking over as the voice of Din Djarin, Gavin Hammon an experienced voice actor best known for his work across major video game franchises including The Walking Dead and Telltale's Batman, steps into the beskar armor to deliver a lighter, tongue-in-cheek rendition of the hardened warrior.

Additionally, the special saw minor recastings for other legacy figures, with voice veteran Eric Bauza stepping in for Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, and Carl Lumbly taking over the voice of Greef Karga following the passing of Carl Weathers in 2024.

"It’s always a unique challenge stepping into iconic boots, especially when those boots belong to Pedro Pascal," an industry voice director noted following the release. "Gavin Hammon brings brilliant comedic timing while maintaining that trademark, gravelly Mandalorian cadence."

Scheduling Clashes or A Shift in Focus?

Neither Lucasfilm nor Pascal’s representatives have issued an official statement regarding why the 51-year-old actor opted out of the animated special.

However, industry sources attribute the omission to Pascal's notoriously packed production schedule. Having spent much of the past year juggling commitments for Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps, HBO’s The Last of Us, and promotional rounds for feature films, finding time for animated voice sessions proved unfeasible.

Pascal remains inextricably linked to the live-action version of the character, having recently headlined the feature film The Mandalorian and Grogu.
