Formula 1 arrives at the historic Autodromo Nazionale Monza for Round 13 of the 2026 season under scorching conditions, prompting the FIA to officially declare the Italian Grand Prix a heat-hazard event.
The heat hazard classification, which is triggered when forecasts predict temperatures topping 31°C (87.8°F) at any point during Sunday's main event, is only the second heat hazard designation this year, following the Austrian Grand Prix earlier in the summer. Ambient conditions around Monza, located northeast of Milan, are projected to remain in the mid-30°C range throughout the entire weekend, having already reached 36°C near Milan's Linate airport earlier in the week.
Driver Cooling Tech and Ballast Rules
With cockpit temperatures easily climbing past 40°C, drivers face serious overheating risks while wearing multiple layers of fireproof gear, helmets, and balaclavas.
First introduced in 2025 following extreme conditions at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, the FIA's heat hazard protocols grant teams options to combat thermal stress:
- Cooling Systems & Vests: Teams can utilize advanced driver cooling gear, including a specialized top worn beneath fireproof overalls. This shirt pumps chilled liquid, such as glycol, through an internal network of piping. Drivers may also wear a dedicated cooling vest.
- Weight Adjustments: To account for the extra equipment, the minimum car weight limit is adjusted upward.
- The 5kg Ballast Alternative: The cooling system remains optional. However, to eliminate any performance advantage from running lighter, any driver who opts out of wearing the cooling gear must carry an equivalent 5kg of ballast in their car.
- System Limitations: Some drivers opt against using the liquid cooling tops due to comfort preferences or the risk of running out of coolant mid-race. If the liquid runs dry, heat transfer causes the fluid to match internal car temperatures, becoming significantly hotter than the outside air.
Track Setup, Energy Management, and The Battle For The Championship
The legendary 5.793km venue features minor track tweaks for 2026, including rebuilt kerbs at Turns 1, 4, and 8, along with a new asphalt run-off replacing gravel at Turn 5. Pirelli simulation data projects lap times will be nearly two seconds faster than last year, placing extra emphasis on energy management with the updated power units down Monza's long straights.
Home favorite Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship into the weekend with a 59-point cushion over Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. However, McLaren's Lando Norris enters Monza riding momentum after capturing his second straight victory at Zandvoort.
Track action begins Friday, September 4th, with Free Practice 1 and 2, followed by Saturday's practice and qualifying sessions ahead of the race on Sunday, September 6th.
