Son of Crown Princess of Norway Charged with Rape and Assault

Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship before her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, has been charged with 32 criminal offences including four counts of rape, domestic violence, and filming women without consent following a year-long investigation. Prosecutors say the charges involve two former partners and span from 2018 to 2024, with one alleged rape happening after his arrest. Høiby denies the rape and domestic abuse allegations but plans to admit guilt to some lesser offences, according to his lawyer.

The charges detail repeated violence against one ex-partner, including hitting, choking, and kicking her while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He’s also accused of violating restraining orders and associating with known gang members. “He does not agree with the claims regarding rape and domestic violence,” his lawyer said, adding that Høiby intends to “present a detailed account of his version of events before the court.”

Though not a royal by title or role, Høiby’s connection to the Norwegian monarchy has drawn public attention. Crown Prince Haakon commented that the case is “challenging and difficult” for everyone involved, but stressed that the courts will decide the outcome. If convicted on the most serious charges, Høiby could face up to 10 years in prison. His trial is expected to begin in January and last six weeks.
