Trump Calls for Cancellation of Nation's 250th Birthday Concerts After Wave of Artist Walkouts

The musical lineup meant to celebrate America's 250th birthday has crumbled into a fierce political debate, prompting US President Donald Trump to demand that the entire concert series be called off.
The controversy surrounds the Freedom 250 concert series, which is part of the upcoming 16-day Great American State Fair that is set to take over Washington D.C.'s National Mall from June 25th to July 10th.
Freedom 250 was introduced last year via a presidential executive order to curate a separate, administration-backed task force, with Trump serving as its chair and Vice President JD Vance as vice chair. The event is separate from America250, which is a congressionally mandated organization that was established a decade ago with bipartisan leadership to plan semiquincentennial celebrations.
When the state fair’s performance lineup was unveiled on Wednesday, it featured a diverse mix of performances. However, within days, a majority of the booked talent abruptly dropped out, explaining that organizers completely obscured the event's ties to the current White House.
Country star Martina McBride, classic funk outfit The Commodores, rock frontman Bret Michaels, Morris Day and the Time, and rapper Young MC all publicly withdrew from the 16-day schedule.
Many of the musicians have claimed that they were explicitly told they were signing up for a standard, non-partisan cultural celebration, not an event backed by the President. Rapper Young MC expressed frustration over how the booking was handled behind the scenes.
“I had no clue it was considered a ‘Trump-backed’ event, so that was new to me,” the rapper says. “My whole thing was ‘tell me what the event is, what it’s about, who you are, and then give me the choice of whether I want to do the event or not.’ I was never given that choice. I was told one thing and then it was a bait-and-switch. All the comments I’ve seen from the artists that have dropped out thought it was supposed to be a regular show in D.C.”
McBride echoed those sentiments in a statement posted to her personal X account, sharing that she was “presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading”.
Freedom 250 organizers have strongly pushed back against the narrative that the state fair is a partisan affair, releasing a statement insisting the group is single-mindedly focused on unifying the country around a shared historical milestone.
Following the talent dropping out of the event, Trump took to Truth Social late on Saturday afternoon to express his frustrations and to push for a total cancellation of the musical performances.
“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain,” Trump posted.
He punctuated his decree by stating, “Cancel it,” before pivoting to attack a federal judge who had recently blocked his administration's attempt to unilaterally attach the Trump name to the Kennedy Center.
Trump has also revealed that he was directing his staff to look into the logistics of organizing an "AMERICA IS BACK" rally at the Washington D.C. National Mall at the same time as the Freedom 250 event, boasting that he serves as the "Number One Attraction anywhere in the World" and asserting that he regularly draws "much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime".
Despite the chaos surrounding the musical acts, Freedom 250 spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez has announced that the broader Great American State Fair will move forward as planned. Billed as a massive, World’s Fair-style exposition featuring state exhibits, family attractions, military flyovers, and a Ferris wheel, the fair will launch on June 24th with an opening ceremony spearheaded by the president himself.
A handful of acts still plan to perform. Nineties pop icon Vanilla Ice defended his decision to keep his June 26th concert date, stating on Instagram: “This is not a political platform. This is celebrating America's birthday”. Fab Morvan, one half of the public-facing duo for Milli Vanilli, also confirmed he will take the stage as scheduled, though the studio vocalists behind the group's music have issued a separate statement confirming they will not participate.
The fair is part of a broader, summer-long celebration that includes a UFC match on the South Lawn of the White House, a Grand Prix race in August, and the release of limited-edition passports emblazoned with Trump’s portrait.
