‘The Shadow Collective Returns’: Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 Release Window Confirmed for 2027
LOS ANGELES — Lucasfilm Animation has officially confirmed that the second season of its critically acclaimed animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
The update was delivered by head writer and executive producer Matt Michnovetz during an animation panel at D23 over the weekend, putting an end to fan speculation that the former Sith Lord’s journey would resume before the end of this year.
The news follows a triumphant first season that debuted in April 2026, earning widespread praise for its gritty depiction of the galactic underworld and garnering a 98% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Extending the Dark Side Legacy
Set during the early years of the Galactic Empire following Order 66, Shadow Lord stars veteran actor Sam Witwer, who reprises his iconic voice role as Maul.
The first season chronicled Maul’s bloody, calculated efforts to rebuild his criminal syndicate, the Shadow Collective, while plotting vengeance against his former master, Darth Sidious.
Although Lucasfilm quietly renewed the series just days before its Season 1 premiere, Michnovetz urged patience from fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter:
"Shadow Lord will be back, and it's coming out next year in 2027," Michnovetz told the audience. "The team is working rapidly behind the scenes, but we want to ensure the narrative scope and visual quality match the ambitious bar set by the first ten episodes."
While a specific premiere month remains under wraps, industry analysts speculate that Lucasfilm may position Season 2 in the latter half of 2027 to complement a landmark year for the franchise.
A Milestone Year for Star Wars
The 2027 release window places Shadow Lord Season 2 at the heart of Lucasfilm’s 50th-anniversary celebrations honoring the 1977 release of original film A New Hope.
The year is shaping up to be one of the busiest streaming and theatrical calendars in Lucasfilm history, with live-action series Ahsoka Season 2 set to land in January 2027 and the feature film Star Wars: Starfighter arriving in cinemas in May 2027.
