‘From the Dope Game to the Rap Game’: Trailer Drops for Snowfall Spin-off The Drop: A Snowfall Saga
LOS ANGELES — FX has officially released the first teaser trailer for The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, providing fans with a gripping first look as beloved characters Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons attempt to navigate the treacherous rise of 1990s West Coast hip-hop (trailer below).
The eight-part spin-off series, which premieres on 8th September on FX and Hulu (and via Disney+ internationally), picks up in the aftermath of the late-1980s crack epidemic that devastated South Central Los Angeles across Snowfall’s six-season run.
Reuniting stars Gail Bean and Isaiah John, the series charts a dramatic pivot in tone as the lingering shadows of the drug trade give way to the explosive rise of the music industry.
A New Gold Rush in 1990s Los Angeles
The newly dropped trailer captures the raw grit and cultural pulse of early 1990s Los Angeles as West Coast hip-hop emerges as a dominant cultural force.
Having survived addiction and the horrors of the street trade, Wanda Bell (Bean) sets her sights on reinventing herself as an ambitious music executive. Armed with a belief in the power of rap music to reshape American society, she lands an internship with Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Mychal Smith), a former drug dealer turned record label boss.
"Music brought me back to life," Wanda declares in a poignant voiceover opening the trailer. "This is the new Gold Rush. No cops, no murder. From the dope gang to the rap gang."
However, Wanda’s ambition quickly collides with street politics as she attempts to manage a talented yet volatile local rapper, Artillery (played by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III), whose legal entanglements threaten to dismantle her fledgling music roster.
Diverging Paths and Growing Friction
While Wanda embraces the intoxicating hustle of the music business, her partner Leon Simmons (John) seeks a radically different path toward personal redemption.
Determined to leave his criminal past behind for good, Leon establishes a free legal clinic aimed at supporting South Central residents recovering from the fallout of the drug era. As Wanda leans deeper into the morally ambiguous world of music executives and street figures, the trailer hints at escalating tension between the couple.
Executive produced by Malcolm Spellman alongside long-time Snowfall showrunner Dave Andron, the series boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, Mykelti Williamson, and Eric Balfour.

Carrying the Legacy of John Singleton
Following the conclusion of Snowfall in 2023, creative leads emphasized their dedication to honoring the cultural authenticity established by late series co-creator John Singleton.
By shifting focus from the streets to the recording booth, The Drop aims to examine how the talent, hustle, and trauma of South Central transformed the American entertainment landscape.
With the trailer now circulating across social platforms, audiences will not have to wait long to see whether Wanda and Leon can build a lasting legacy when the eight-episode saga debuts on 8th September.
