Box Office Bonanza: Disney’s Loaded 2028 Slate Positions Studio for Billion-Dollar Blockbuster Streak
LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Company is laying the groundwork for an unprecedented box-office takeover, locking in a packed 2028 theatrical release schedule stuffed with heavyweight animation sequels, live-action remakes, and Marvel tentpoles.
Following major announcements unveiled at the recent D23 convention, industry analysts are predicting that 2028 could prove to be one of the most lucrative single calendar years in studio history.
With 14 release slots reserved across its core banners, Disney is leaning heavily into proven intellectual property capable of breaching the coveted $1 billion global threshold.
Animation Titans Return
Leading the charge for Disney’s theatrical resurgence is Pixar's Incredibles 3, officially dated for 16th June 2028.
Coming a decade after Incredibles 2 amassed $1.24 billion worldwide, the third instalment, helmed by Elemental director Peter Sohn, shifts focus to elder siblings Violet and Dash as they step out from the shadows of Bob and Helen Parr to prove themselves as independent superheroes.
Pixar will also open the year in March with its original supernatural feature Ghost Market, set in Hawaii.
Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action reimagining of Tangled is scheduled to land in cinemas on 31st March 2028. Starring Teagan Croft (Titans) as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel, the feature aims to replicate the $1 billion-plus success of previous live-action adaptations like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.
Marvel Unleashes the X-Men and Black Panther
Marvel Studios will anchor Disney's summer and holiday corridors with two of the most anticipated superhero projects of the decade.
On 5th May 2028, Marvel will formally launch its long-awaited X-Men reboot. Featuring an ensemble cast including Adam Driver, Inde Navarrette, Christopher Abbott, and Samara Weaving, alongside Hugh Jackman. The film marks the Mutant crew's official integration into the cinematic mainline.
Closing out the year on 15th December 2028, Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3 will hit theatres. Given that the original 2018 film grossed $1.34 billion, the third chapter represents one of Marvel's most bankable commercial bets.

A Methodical Franchise Strategy
Box office analysts note that Disney's 2028 calendar reflects a deliberate strategy of spacing out its biggest franchises to avoid cannibalising audiences while ensuring a steady drumbeat of event cinema.
With Frozen III scheduled for late 2027 and Avatar 4 set for December 2029, the 2028 slate bridges the gap with a blend of nostalgia-driven sequels and fresh franchise reboots.
Should theatrical attendance maintain its current trajectory, Disney looks comfortably on track to dominate global box-office charts throughout 2028.
