CHICAGO — Billionaire entertainment mogul Tyler Perry has pledged to pay off a nearly $18,000 (£13,700) lien on an elderly woman’s home after an insurance dispute left her displaced and facing financial ruin.
Brenda Daurham, 81, had been locked out of her longtime home in Markham, Illinois, for over six months following a devastating pipe burst beneath her kitchen sink in February. Despite holding a homeowners policy with insurance titan Allstate for over 30 years, her claim was formally denied under policy clauses citing "wear and tear and seepage".
The dispute escalated when Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services, a contractor Daurham engaged on initial assurances that the damage was fully covered, placed an $18,000 lien against her property to cover unpaid mitigation costs.
A Public Callout to an Industry Giant
The 81-year-old's plight gained national attention after a local television news report highlighted her emotional collapse over the threat of losing her family home.
Taking to social media on Wednesday, Perry shared Daurham's story with his millions of followers, taking aim at Allstate's corporate tagline in a direct callout.
"Hey Allstate, step to the front real quick," Perry wrote on Instagram. "This woman is 81 years old. You call this being in good hands?"
Hours later, the 56-year-old filmmaker confirmed he would personally intervene to settle the outstanding contractor debt and finance the remaining structural repairs necessary to allow Daurham to safely return home.
‘I Have Nothing At All’
The incident began on 14th February when a burst pipe sent water rushing through the main level of Daurham's residence.
According to Daurham, initial phone conversations with representatives led her to believe the restoration work would be funded by her insurer. However, the subsequent denial left her in temporary housing, grappling with rising stress and deteriorating health.
"I have nothing, nothing at all, so I just want somebody to help me," a tearful Daurham told reporters prior to Perry's intervention. "I had to go to the emergency room because I was breaking down. I was so nervous I didn't know what to do."
