Millhouse Voice Actress Says Goodbye to The Simpsons

Millhouse Voice Actress Says Goodbye to The Simpsons

Pamela Hayden, the voice behind The Simpsons fan-favourite Milhouse Van Houten, is retiring after 35 years. Sunday’s episode, a Treehouse of Horror special, will mark her final performance on the iconic show. Hayden, 70, announced her decision, saying, “The time has come for me to hang up my microphone.”

Milhouse, known for his big glasses and bigger heart, first appeared in 1989. Created as Bart Simpson’s loyal and often unlucky best friend, Milhouse became a standout character, beloved for his awkward charm and hilarious one-liners. The blue-haired boy was even named after President Richard Milhous Nixon. Show creator Matt Groening joked, “We named him Milhouse because that was the most unfortunate name a kid could have.”

Reflecting on the character, Hayden said in a farewell video, “People are always saying what a nerd he is, but one thing I love about Milhouse is he’s always getting knocked down, but he keeps getting up. I love the little guy. It’s this wonderful analogy for life.”

Hayden voiced other Springfield residents too, including school bully Jimbo Jones, Rod and Todd Flanders, and Lisa’s friend Janey Powell. But, Milhouse remained her most memorable role. She recalled fans often quoting his lines back to her, a testament to the character’s cultural impact.

Groening praised Hayden’s contribution, saying, “Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the hapless kid with the biggest nose in Springfield. She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her.” Over the years, Milhouse’s moments have become internet sensations, with memes and clips racking up millions of views.

Hayden’s retirement marks the end of an era for The Simpsons, which has been on air since 1989. Producers confirmed plans to recast her roles in the coming months, ensuring that Milhouse and the rest of Springfield continue to thrive.

For Hayden, stepping away wasn’t easy. “It’s been an honour and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show,” she said. “I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses.”
