UK Minister Launches New Development Portfolio for Nepal

The UK Minister for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell, concluded a two-day visit to Nepal on February 19–20, during which he unveiled a new development portfolio aimed at deepening the historic partnership between the UK and Nepal. The portfolio, valued at £400 million ($505 million), is poised to address key challenges including the climate crisis, economic transformation, governance, and inclusion.

The ambitious plan is expected to generate significant impacts, including the creation of 13,500 jobs, attracting over $1 billion in investment, and improving access to quality healthcare and education for two million women and girls by 2030.

Minister Mitchell emphasized the strong bonds between the UK and Nepal, highlighting their shared ambition for a resilient and prosperous future. The development portfolio, launched during the visit, underscores the UK's commitment to supporting sustainable and inclusive development globally.

During his stay, Minister Mitchell engaged in discussions with Nepalese leaders, including Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat. They reaffirmed UK support for Nepal's Investment Summit in April 2024 and explored necessary reforms to attract investment and mobilize finance.

The new portfolio includes programs aimed at promoting green and inclusive growth, attracting foreign direct investment, and fostering more inclusive business practices. Minister Mitchell witnessed the impact of UK investment firsthand, visiting projects such as the Upper-Trishuli-1 Hydropower project, which received nearly $22 million in British International Investment funding.

Additionally, Minister Mitchell observed UK-supported initiatives focused on job creation, entrepreneurship, and climate resilience, including the Climate Action for a Resilient Asia program and efforts to combat gender-based violence.

The visit underscored the UK's commitment to supporting Nepal's development journey and fostering a resilient and prosperous future for the country. As both nations look ahead, the partnership between the UK and Nepal is poised to address emerging challenges and capitalize on new opportunities, ensuring a brighter future for all.
