‘Hadouken!’: First Trailer for Street Fighter Reboot Unleashes Retro Chaos at CinemaCon
LAS VEGAS — The World Warriors have officially returned to the big screen, and they’ve brought the 1990s with them. Paramount Pictures closed its explosive CinemaCon 2026 presentation on Thursday by debuting the first trailer for the live-action Street Fighter reboot, promising a visceral, neon-soaked trip back to the series' arcade roots (trailer below).
Produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Capcom, the film is being positioned as a "correction" for the franchise's chequered cinematic history. Directed by Kitao Sakurai (Twisted Metal, The Eric Andre Show), the reboot is officially set for a global theatrical release on 16th October 2026.
A 1993 Time Capsule
In a bold creative choice, the trailer confirms the film is a period piece set in 1993, the peak of the Street Fighter II phenomenon. The footage opens with a "scrappy, throwback" vibe, backed by the grunge anthem "What’s Up?" by 4 Non Blondes, immediately grounding the story in the era of arcades and acid-wash denim.
The plot follows estranged friends Ryu (Andrew Koji) and a "washed-up" Ken Masters (Noah Centineo). The trailer features a surprisingly sombre moment of Ken performing mournful karaoke before they are recruited by the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) for the "World Warrior Tournament", a brutal clash designed to uncover a deadly global conspiracy.
Hadoukens and High Kicks
While the story aims for "character depth," the action is anything but subtle. The trailer concludes with a spectacular "glow-up" for Ryu’s signature Hadouken, rendered with practical energy effects that drew a standing ovation from the Las Vegas crowd.
Fans of the game will also spot several "Easter eggs," including a blink-and-you-miss-it shot of Ken destroying a luxury car in an alleyway—a direct homage to the classic bonus stages of the arcade original.

Breaking the ‘Video Game Curse’
Director Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the high-octane Twisted Metal series, appears to have found a middle ground between the camp of the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme version and the gritty realism of modern action cinema.
“We aren’t shying away from the high-kicks or the towels,” Sakurai told reporters on the red carpet, referencing a scene where characters fight in a bathhouse. “We’re embracing the frenzy of the games, but we’re making sure the punches actually hurt.”
A Heavyweight Ensemble
The cast list is a "Who's Who" of international talent and combat sports icons. Alongside Jason Momoa as the electricity-wielding Blanka, the film features Roman Reigns (Joe Anoai), Orville Peck as a masked Vega, and Olivier Richters as the towering Zangief.
Scripted by T.J. Fixman with a story by horror maestro Gary Dauberman (It), the film is being touted as a "blood, sweat, and fireballs" epic that aims to do for fighting games what The Last of Us did for prestige television.
Street Fighter hits UK and global cinemas on 16th October 2026.
