Fault on the Vault: Netflix Scraps Millie Bobby Brown’s Olympics Biopic ‘Perfect’

LOS ANGELES — The long-gestating Olympic dream for Netflix and Millie Bobby Brown has officially come to an end. In a surprising industry shakeup, the streaming giant has canceled production on Perfect, the high-profile biographical drama that was set to star Brown as legendary American gymnast Kerri Strug.

The news, first reported by Deadline and confirmed by sources close to the production on Friday 10th April comes just two months before cameras were scheduled to roll. While the project had already survived a director swap last year, it appears a breakdown in the partnership between its star and the production team was the final blow.

The "Creative Differences" Collapse

The primary reason for the cancellation is Millie Bobby Brown’s sudden exit from the project. According to insiders, the 22-year-old Stranger Things actress departed following a series of "creative differences" with the producers regarding the script’s direction and the physical demands of the role.

Netflix reportedly made the swift decision to scrap the film entirely rather than recast the lead. Industry analysts suggest that without Brown’s massive global "star power", which has fueled recent hits like Damsel and the Enola Holmes franchise, the streamer felt the project was no longer a viable "prestige" play.

“The film was designed as a visceral, character-driven deep dive into a singular moment in sports history,” a source close to the streamer noted. “When the creative visions between the lead and the producers diverged, there was no clear path forward.”

A Story Left Untold

Perfect was slated to chronicle the heroic 1996 Atlanta Olympics journey of the "Magnificent Seven." The film’s climax was to be Strug’s iconic second vault, performed on a severely injured ankle to clinch the gold medal for Team USA—an image that remains etched in Olympic lore.

Brown’s Busy Slate

While the loss of Perfect is a blow to fans of the actress, Brown’s relationship with Netflix remains ironclad. She is currently deep in post-production for Enola Holmes 3 and is preparing for the global press tour of the romantic comedy Just Picture It, which stars Gabriel LaBelle and Idina Menzel.

Critics have noted that the cancellation may be a blessing in disguise for Brown’s schedule. Following the emotional series finale of Stranger Things earlier this year, the actress has reportedly been looking to balance her workload as she transitions into more producer-heavy roles under her PCMA Productions banner.

The Coppola Curse?

For director Gia Coppola, the news is a significant setback. Perfect was expected to be her most commercial project to date, featuring cinematography by recent Oscar-winner Autumn Durald Arkapaw. Coppola reportedly spent months in pre-production, working with stunt coordinators and former gymnasts to ensure the film's "technical authenticity."

With the project officially dead at Netflix, it remains to be seen if another studio will attempt to pick up the rights to Kerri Strug’s story or if this particular Olympic flame has been extinguished for good.
