Trouble in Monte Carlo: Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper’s Ocean’s Eleven Prequel Loses Director
HOLLYWOOD — The highly anticipated 1960s-set prequel to the Ocean’s Eleven franchise has hit a significant roadblock. Jay Roach, the director behind Austin Powers and Bombshell, has reportedly exited the project due to "creative differences" and scheduling conflicts, leaving the star-studded heist film in a state of temporary flux.
The film, which reunites Barbie powerhouses Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling alongside Oscar-nominee Bradley Cooper, was slated to begin principal photography in Monaco and London this summer. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has now hit the pause button as they scramble to find a replacement capable of handling the film's "Old Hollywood" aesthetic.
A ‘Dramatically Different’ Vision
While plot details have been kept under wraps, it is understood that Robbie and Gosling are set to play the parents of Danny Ocean (originally played by George Clooney). The prequel, tentatively titled Oceans, is described as a glamorous, high-stakes romantic heist set against the backdrop of the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.
Sources close to the production suggest that Roach’s departure stemmed from a shift in tone. While the director’s background in comedy influenced the early drafts, the studio and the lead stars have reportedly pushed for a more "sophisticated, Hitchcockian thriller" vibe—a direction that ultimately led to a mutual parting of ways.
The ‘Barbie’ Reunion on Ice?
The news comes as a blow to fans eager to see Robbie and Gosling share the screen for the first time since their record-breaking turn in Barbie. For Bradley Cooper, who joined the cast in late 2025 as the film’s central antagonist, a ruthless casino mogul, the delay poses a potential conflict with his own upcoming directorial project.

Who Steps into the Director’s Chair?
Speculation is already rife regarding who will take the reins. Industry insiders have floated the name of Greta Gerwig, given her established shorthand with Robbie and Gosling, though her current commitments to Netflix’s Narnia chronicles may prove a hurdle.
Other names in the frame include Guy Ritchie, whose recent success with The Gentlemen series has proven his mastery of the British heist genre, and Steven Soderbergh, the architect of the original 2001 trilogy, though he has previously stated he is "done" with the franchise.
“This isn't just a standard reboot,” noted film analyst Sarah Jenkins. “Warner Bros. views this as a prestige summer tentpole. They aren't looking for a journeyman; they want a visionary who can marry the 60s glamour with the cool, effortless energy of the Soderbergh era.”
A Heist Still Worth Having
Despite the setback, Warner Bros. remains fully committed to the film. Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is still spearheading the project, and the script, penned by Carrie Solomon, is said to be in "excellent shape."
The studio is expected to announce a new director within the next fortnight to avoid losing the "golden window" of its lead actors' availability. For now, the vaults of Monte Carlo remain safe, at least until a new mastermind is hired to crack them.
