‘The Conversations are Very Real’: Teyana Taylor Teases One Battle After Another Sequel

LAS VEGAS — Fresh from a dominant sweep at the 98th Academy Awards, the world of Paul Thomas Anderson’s action-epic One Battle After Another may be expanding. Teyana Taylor, whose breakout performance as the revolutionary Perfidia Beverly Hills earned her a Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination, has revealed she is "currently begging" for a sequel.

Speaking during the final leg of the film’s award campaign, Taylor confirmed that discussions regarding a follow-up, tentatively dubbed One Battle After Another 2 by fans, have moved beyond mere wishful thinking.

Revisiting Perfidia

The original film, inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, concluded with Taylor’s character in exile in Mexico after selling out her revolutionary cohorts to save herself from prison. While the film provided a definitive end for Leonardo DiCaprio’s Bob Ferguson, Taylor believes there is "unfinished business" regarding Perfidia’s 16-year absence and her estranged daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti).

“I’m making little jokes with Paul, but the conversations are very, very real,” Taylor told IndieWire. “I’m like, ‘We need to see what Perfidia did in those 16 years.’ I want to give everybody confirmation that I am currently begging PTA to give us that.”

Breaking the ‘No Sequel’ Rule?

A sequel would mark a historic first for Paul Thomas Anderson, a director notoriously averse to returning to previous works. However, the unprecedented commercial success of One Battle After Another, which grossed over £170 million ($212.9m) worldwide and became the most expensive film of his career, has reportedly made the studio, Warner Bros., keen to explore a franchise.

Industry insiders suggest that rather than a direct sequel, the project could take the form of a spin-off focused entirely on Perfidia’s "lost years" in Mexico.

A ‘Coming of Age’ for Taylor

Taylor’s portrayal of the "far-left revolutionary" has been hailed as the ultimate pivot for the multi-hyphenate star. Following her acclaimed turn in A Thousand and One, her role in the Anderson epic has cemented her as a top-tier Hollywood powerhouse.

“I’ve put everything into this character,” Taylor remarked. “When Willa walked out the door in that last scene, I said, ‘Where is she really going? Is she going to find her mommy?’ I love that it’s still hopeful. There is room for a little part two in there somewhere.”

The ‘Cliff Booth’ Precedent

The buzz surrounding a potential sequel mirrors the recently announced The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a spin-off of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood directed by David Fincher. If Anderson does "cave," as some critics fear, it would likely be under a similar experimental banner rather than a traditional action sequel.

While Warner Bros. has yet to officially greenlight a second installment, Taylor’s public campaign and the film’s status as the 2026 Best Picture winner make the prospect of more "Battle" increasingly likely.
