‘One Season Was Enough’: Nicolas Cage Breaks Silence Following Sudden Cancellation of Spider-Noir
LOS ANGELES — Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has broken his silence following Prime Video’s decision to cancel his live-action Marvel drama Spider-Noir after just one season.
The eight-episode series, which saw Cage step into his first-ever regular television lead role as down-on-his-luck 1930s private investigator Ben Reilly, was officially axed by Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television over the weekend. The decision came despite the show amassing a leading 11 Emmy nominations for Prime Video and scoring critical praise.
Addressing the abrupt cancellation on Sunday, the 62-year-old actor struck a philosophical, philosophical tone, expressing pride in the experimental nature of the series.
"One season was enough to say what we wanted to say," Cage stated in a brief press release. "It was a dangerous, innovative, pop-art take on Spider-Man... Onwards, upwards, inwards."
High Costs and Viewer Drop-Off Behind Shock Axing
The cancellation sent shockwaves through television trade circles given the show's initial performance. Debut metrics showed that Spider-Noir accumulated an impressive 2.6 billion viewing minutes within its first six weeks of release, alongside an outstanding 92 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, trade sources report that the decision ultimately boiled down to a steep production cost against steep audience drop-off after the first two episodes.
The show made television history by being filmed and released simultaneously in two distinct formats: an authentic monochrome black-and-white print and a vibrant "True-Hue" colour version. Filming every scene twice to accommodate both visual styles ballooned production budgets significantly, making a second-season renewal financially unviable for the streamer.
A Critical Darlings Era Ends
Showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot adapted the comic book property into a gritty detective story featuring an ensemble cast including Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson.
Despite the live-action series coming to a permanent close, Cage's relationship with the character is not entirely over. The actor, who originally voiced the hardboiled hero in the 2018 Oscar-winning animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is still set to reprise his vocal role in next summer’s animated blockbuster Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Amazon and Sony Partnership Continues
While Spider-Noir will not return for Season 2, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television confirmed that their underlying multi-title development agreement remains intact.
The two studios are currently co-developing several undisclosed television projects based on Sony's catalog of Marvel IP, with at least one mystery live-action project reported to be nearing an official series greenlight.
For Cage, all eight episodes of Spider-Noir remain available for streaming globally on Prime Video as a self-contained, single-season event.
