US Government Pushes Tech Giants to Help Fight Online Censorship

The US government reached out to big tech companies like as Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Cloudflare for support in fighting online censorship. The focus is on countries with limited internet freedom such as Russia, Iran and Myanmar. The goal is to help people in these nations access open data by improving ways that overcome government restrictions.

What’s the Plan?

Virtual Private Networks are an important tool in this fight. VPNs let users to browse the internet without restrictions. It hides their location and encrypts their data.
The Open Technology Fund which is a US based nonprofit promotes various VPN services. Demand for these services has increased strongly. Especially during Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 which resulted in more difficult online censorship. The OTF now allows around 46 million users each month. And that a figure that has nearly quadrupled in size. But the organization is finding it difficult to keep up with this growing need.

What Are the Tech Companies Doing?

The White House recently had a meeting with officials from these big tech companies. They asked these companies to provide reasonably priced or sponsored server bandwidth. Server bandwidth is the amount of data that may be transferred over the internet at once. By cutting the cost of this bandwidth low these companies could help the OTF in providing VPN services more effectively.
Cloudflare has already taken steps to help by documenting internet outages and censorship in certain countries. However Amazon, Google and Microsoft have yet to openly reply to the request for reasonably priced or sponsored bandwidth.

Why Is This Important?

The countries that have very strict online censorship the information they get or want is frequently restricted or denied. VPNs are a must need for those people living in these situations. Why because they allow them to bypass restrictions and access a free and open internet. The growing availability of these tools may have a major effect on people's ability to stay informed and updated and speak freely.

What’s Next?

The request from the US government acts as a call to action. They want technology companies to support global internet freedom. If these companies agree to supply the necessary resources and tools it might have a major effect on millions of users in authoritarian countries. The next steps will be based on how soon the tech giants respond and give the necessary support.
