Global Shift: The Grammy Awards Officially Introduce ‘Best Asian Pop Music Performance’ Category

LOS ANGELES — In one of the most significant structural overhauls in its history, the Recording Academy has officially announced the creation of a brand-new competitive category for the Grammy Awards: Best Asian Pop Music Performance.

The long-awaited addition is part of a sweeping package of rule modifications unveiled on Tuesday 16th June, ahead of the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, scheduled to take place on 7th February 2027.

The introduction of the award marks a monumental institutional shift for the American music body, which has faced years of intense public criticism from global fans for its historically inconsistent and seemingly out-of-touch engagement with Asian pop genres, most notably K-pop.

A Field for K-Pop, J-Pop and C-Pop

According to the Recording Academy’s newly updated rulebook, the new category sits within the Pop, Dance, and Electronic field. It is designed to recognise artistic excellence in vocal Asian pop performances originating from or widely recognised within Asian markets.

The Academy explicitly name-checked major regional movements, including K-pop (Korean pop), J-pop (Japanese pop), and C-pop (Chinese pop)—as the primary drivers behind the category’s inception.

Crucially, the criteria outlines strict linguistic guardrails to ensure authenticity. To be eligible for a nomination, track submissions must feature a "meaningful use of one or more Asian languages".

While bilingual or multilingual tracks are permitted, the language must be distinctly identifiable throughout the performance. Consequently, entirely English-language crossover records—such as BTS’s multi-platinum 2020 mega-hit "Dynamite" or Blackpink star Rosé’s recent viral smash "APT", would not retrospectively fit the new category's blueprint. The Academy emphasized that the overall musical style, rather than the ethnicity or nationality of the performing artist, will ultimately dictate eligibility.

Reflecting ‘Genre Scale and Impact’

The creation of the category arrives after years of boardroom discussions inside the Academy regarding how to fairly evaluate a sector of the industry that routinely shatters global streaming records, generates billions in revenue, and commands massive, fanatical fanbases.

In an official statement addressing the changes, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. framed the introduction as a natural, long-overdue evolution of the awards.

"As Asian pop's influence has continued to grow within our process, our members and Trustees felt this was the right moment to create a category that more accurately reflects the genre's scale, artistry and global impact," Mason stated. "2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we're seeing across music."

Historically, the Grammys have maintained a deeply complicated relationship with Asian acts. Despite their immense cultural hegemony, BTS famously went zero-for-three across three consecutive years of nominations in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category between 2021 and 2023. While the new category significantly raises the probability of a major Grammy win for acts like BTS, Blackpink, or J-pop titans like Yoasobi, the announcement has sparked a nuanced debate online.

While many fans have celebrated the news as a validation of regional artistry, some industry commentators express caution, warning that a dedicated sub-category could inadvertently serve to "ghettoise" Asian artists, separating them out of contention for the prestigious "Big Four" general field awards (Album, Record, and Song of the Year, and Best New Artist).

The Five New Categories Debuting at the 2027 Grammys

Newly Introduced Category Target Discipline / Field Primary Criteria / Structural Guardrails
Best Asian Pop Music Performance Pop, Dance & Electronic Recognising K-pop, J-pop, C-pop with meaningful use of Asian languages
Best Latin Song Latin / Songwriting Awarded to songwriters for new tracks recorded predominantly in Spanish
Best R&B Collaboration / Duo R&B Excellence in contemporary R&B performances by groups or solo pairings
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance Pop Tailored for traditional tracks that cannot properly intermingle with modern pop
Best Traditional Folk Album American Roots / Folk Dedicated to preserving historical, traditional folk acoustic recordings

Loosening the Reins on Best New Artist

The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category was not the only headline-grabbing change announced by the Academy. In an effort to align the awards with the realities of modern streaming and independent artist development, the rules surrounding Best New Artist (BNA) have been relaxed.

Candidates may now be submitted for BNA consideration up to four times, an increase from the rigid three-submission cap of previous years. Mason noted that because modern acts frequently self-release multiple projects before breaking into mainstream consciousness, the previous limit was penalising slower-burning success stories.

Additionally, the Academy has lowered the percentage of newly recorded material required for overall album eligibility from 75% down to 66%, ensuring that deluxe editions or albums incorporating older tracks are no longer summarily disqualified.

As the music industry begins projecting who will land the inaugural nominations for the historic Asian pop award, the Recording Academy has successfully guaranteed that when the 69th Grammys air live on ABC next February, the eyes of the entire global music landscape will be watching.
