According to investigators, Jihad Al-Shamie was arrested on suspicion of rape and on police bail at the time when he opened a deadly knife and car assault on a Manchester synagogue. The attack killed Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, killing three others in hospital, and three others are still in hospital. Al-Shamie may have been influenced by strong Islamist ideology, according to police, three more people, aged 18 to mid-40s, had been arrested on suspicion of terrorism commission, planning, and instigation of terrorist attacks. On Friday, families of the deceased men paid their respect to their loved ones, lauding them as heroes who died for others.

Al-Shamie, 35, was a British citizen of Syrian descent who was living in Prestwitch, Manchester.

We suspect Al-Shamie was inspired by extreme Islamist ideology,
police said during initial searches of police and security service counter-terrorism data, but Counter Terrorism Policing's Laurence Taylor said.
We completely distance ourselves from this attack and express our profound shock and sadness for what has transpired in a tweet on Friday.
Our hearts and thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we pray for their strength and guidance. "People in Prestwich told the BBC Al-Shamie, a weightlifting enthusiast who barely spoke to his neighbors.

Mr Daulby, 53, and Mr Cravitz, 66, were killed in the attack after the attacker rammed a car at members of the public before stabbing people on Thursday morning. Mr Daulby was struck by police gunfire shortly after the alarm was sparked, according to Greater Manchester Police. Mr Daulby's family said he

lost his life in the act of courage to help others
and that his last act
was one of profound courage and will be forever remembered. Mr Cravitz, a Crumpsall man, was a worshipper at the synagogue. He was initially thought to be a security guard, but later released a clarification.
He was so generous, caring, and always wanted to talk and get to know people, his family said in tribute. He was devoted to his wife, family, and his food. He will be sorely missed by his wife, family, colleagues, and extended family.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it would investigate the use of lethal force by firearms officers responding to the attack, which occurred on Yom Kippur, the Jewish calendar's busiest day. Mr Daulby was mistakenly shot by armed police, but worshipper Yoni Finlay was also wounded by police leaving him seriously wounded, causing serious injuries. The probe will focus on

circumstances surrounding Jihad Al-Shamie's deadly police shooting,
as well as "whether police caused or contributed to the man's death later discovered to have sustained the deadly gunshot wound.

More information about what happened in the run-up to the attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue on Thursday has been published by counter terror investigators.

We've been told from witness accounts that a man was seen behaving suspiciously outside the synagogue before being confronted by security and walked away,
Mr Taylor said in a tweet on Friday. The incident was not reported to police at the time, and no one was aware of it.
The individual recovered in a car and began his horrific assault,
Mr Taylor said five minutes later. According to him, police are seeking warrants to detain all six people now detained in detention. Three other suspects - two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s – were arrested on suspicion of commission, planning, and instigation of terrorist attacks, according to Greater Manchester Police. As a man began
body-charging the doors, throwing heavy plant pots, doing whatever he could to get in,
Rabbi Daniel Walker was leading prayers when his synagogue was assaulted, describing evil and rage as a nefarious He praised those at the synagogue's quick-thinking: I saw genuine heroism, he said, and people who helped others rather than running away. It was astonishing. This is what they get for killing our children, Al-Shamie's chairman of trusteestold ITV News, "banging his knife into the glass, trying to get through.
