John Lewis Unveils Quirky Christmas Ad Featuring Sentient Venus Flytrap

The Christmas TV advert race is heating up, and John Lewis has thrown a curveball with its 2023 festive offering, titled 'Snapper, the Perfect Tree.' The advert tells a heartwarming yet peculiar tale of a little boy named Alfie and his unexpected companion, a giant Venus flytrap named Snapper.

Released last Thursday, the ad has sparked a range of reactions on social media. Some hailed it as a refreshing departure, however, not everyone was on board, with some wondering if the John Lewis creative team had taken inspiration from "Little Shop Of Horrors."

Unlike competitors relying on A-list stars such as Rick Astley, John Lewis has taken a different approach, focusing on a modern family Christmas. The advert, featuring Andrea Bocelli's Festa, portrays Alfie planting a Christmas tree that unexpectedly transforms into the carnivorous Snapper. The family embraces Snapper, highlighting the evolution of traditions.

Amidst the diverse Christmas ad landscape, John Lewis's 'Snapper' stands out for its unique narrative and emotional resonance. While some critics nitpicked the absence of a father or grandfather in the depicted family, John Lewis defended the portrayal, asserting its commitment to representing the diversity of British life.

Advertisers are projected to spend a record £9.5bn this festive season, raising questions about the impact of these campaigns on attracting new customers.

In a season filled with glitter and celebrity endorsements, John Lewis's 'Snapper' aims to capture hearts with its quirky charm and a reminder that the true spirit of Christmas lies in the joy of family, even if that family includes a giant Venus flytrap.
