Marching on Rome: Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Hannibal’ Epic to Begin Production in Italy
ROME, ITALY — Two decades after they first teamed up for the gritty streets of Training Day, Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua are trading squad cars for war elephants. In a major production update confirmed Wednesday 11th March the duo's long-awaited historical epic, centered on the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca, is officially set to begin filming in Italy this summer.
The untitled Netflix production will be anchored at the storied Cinecittà Studios in Rome, the historic birthplace of classics like Ben-Hur and Cleopatra. Pre-production and location scouting are currently underway across the Italian peninsula, where the bulk of the film’s massive, large-scale battles will be staged.
The Sixth Collaboration of a Powerhouse Duo
This project marks the sixth time Washington and Fuqua have joined forces, following their successful runs with The Equalizer trilogy and The Magnificent Seven. For Washington, the role of Hannibal represents the fulfillment of a 20-year creative ambition; the actor was reportedly attached to a different version of a Hannibal biopic in the early 2000s that never reached the screen.
“This is the one we’ve been waiting for,” a source close to the production told Variety. “Denzel has always wanted to play this character. After the success of Gladiator II, he’s in the perfect mindset to step back into the ancient world, but this time as the man who brought Rome to its knees.”
An Academy Award-Caliber Creative Team
Netflix is sparing no expense to ensure the film matches the gravitas of its lead actor. The production has assembled a "who's who" of Oscar-winning talent:
-
Screenplay: Written by three-time Academy Award nominee John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Skyfall).
-
Cinematography: Three-time Oscar winner Robert Richardson (JFK, The Aviator, Hugo) will lens the film, bringing his signature high-contrast visual style to the Second Punic War.
-
Producers: Washington and Fuqua are producing alongside Erik Olsen and Adam Goldworm under Fuqua’s Hill District Media banner.
Navigating Controversy and History
While excitement is high among film buffs, the production hasn't been without its share of headlines. Washington’s casting sparked a debate in late 2023 that reached the floor of the Tunisian Parliament, with some officials arguing that the Carthaginian general who was of West Semitic (Phoenician) descent, should not be portrayed by a Black actor.
Despite the political discourse, Fuqua and Logan have indicated that the film will prioritize a visceral, character-driven exploration of Hannibal’s tactical brilliance. The narrative is expected to focus on:
-
The Alpine Crossing: The legendary 218 B.C. trek involving 37 war elephants.
-
The Occupation: Hannibal’s 15-year campaign across Southern Italy.
-
The Rivalry: His intellectual and military chess match against Roman general Scipio Africanus.
Italy: The Director’s Favorite Canvas
The move to film in Italy feels like a homecoming for the team. Fuqua and Washington shot much of The Equalizer 3 on the Amalfi Coast in 2023, a process both men described as one of the highlights of their careers. By returning to Cinecittà, they hope to utilize the studio’s world-class facilities to recreate the grandeur of Carthage and the brutalist architecture of Republican Rome.
With production set to kick off in June 2026, the "Hannibal" project is being positioned as a centerpiece of Netflix’s 2027 theatrical and streaming slate.
