LOS ANGELES — Paramount Pictures and Skydance Sports have released the emotional first trailer for Mr. Irrelevant, giving audiences a first look at Superman star David Corenswet’s return to grounded dramatic storytelling (trailer below).
Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50, Long Shot), the upcoming sports biopic chronicles the inspiring true story of the late New York Giants running back John Tuggle. Selected with the final overall pick of the 1983 NFL Draft, a slot traditionally dubbed "Mr Irrelevant", Tuggle defied mounting odds to earn a roster spot and win over his fiery rookie head coach, Bill Parcells.
The film, slated for a Christmas Day theatrical release, sees Corenswet star alongside Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon as Parcells, with Isabel May (1883) playing Tuggle’s partner, Katie.
From Final Draft Pick to Giants Legend
The newly unveiled trailer sets up the sharp contrast between the dismissive "Mr Irrelevant" moniker and Tuggle’s relentless work ethic.
Selected 335th overall in 1983 out of the University of California, Berkeley, Tuggle arrived at training camp as a longshot. Yet through sheer grit, he earned a place on the team, eventually being voted the Giants' Special Teams Player of the Year by his teammates and stepping up as starting fullback late in his rookie season.
The footage highlights the friction and eventual bond between Tuggle and Parcells (Shannon), whose stern coaching style was famously softened by Tuggle's determination.
"He was an inspiration of sorts to me because you always wonder if you could do what he did, if you could endure," the real Parcells previously reflected on Tuggle's impact. "I don't know the answer whether I could or not, but he inspired me."
A Bittersweet Cinematic Tribute
Beyond his on-field achievements, the film tackles the heartbreaking turn in Tuggle’s story. Following his standout 1983 rookie campaign, Tuggle was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Despite undergoing grueling treatments, Tuggle remained an active presence around the team facility throughout 1984 and 1985 before tragically passing away in August 1986 at the age of 25. During their historic 1986 Super Bowl-winning campaign months later, the Giants wore Tuggle's number 38 on their helmets in tribute.
The screenplay, written by Nick Santora (Reacher, FUBAR), reportedly balances the high-energy athletic drama with the deeply personal battle Tuggle faced off the field.
