Microsoft Responds to Leaks Outlining Massive Overhaul for Xbox Game Pass

Microsoft Responds to Leaks Outlining Massive Overhaul for Xbox Game Pass

Microsoft has addressed circulating rumors regarding potential structural changes to Xbox Game Pass, following reports that the platform could discontinue day-one game releases and introduce ad-supported tiers.

The claims originated from ResetEra forum user Slayven, a leaker with a history of reporting unannounced Xbox developments. According to the reported details, Microsoft is evaluating options to alter its subscription tiers to lower entry costs and boost operating margins.

Proposed Tier Structure and Day-One Changes

The leaked details outline a potential restructuring of the service that could take effect between February and April 2027. Under the proposed model, day-one launches for new first-party games would no longer be included in standard subscriptions.

To balance the removal of day-one releases, Microsoft reportedly plans to lower the monthly cost of its ad-free plan by $3. The reported lineup of subscription choices includes:

  • Ad-Supported Game Pass: $12.99 per month.
  • Ad-Free Game Pass: $19.99 per month or $239.99 annually.
  • Game Pass Library with Online Multiplayer: $14.99 per month.
  • Standalone Online Multiplayer: $10.99 per month.
  • Cloud Gaming Add-On: $5.99 per month for up to 25 hours of playtime.
  • Family Plan Add-On: $5.99 per month.

If implemented, features such as cloud streaming and family sharing would no longer sit within the base membership, operating instead as separate add-on costs.

Microsoft’s Statement

Responding to queries regarding the leaks, Microsoft provided an official statement to Paul Tassi of Forbes and GameSpot, choosing not to explicitly deny the rumored plans:

"We regularly test different Game Pass offerings and look at what works best for players in different markets. We don’t have any changes to announce today or plans that have been finalized. There are no changes to previously announced games coming to Game Pass Ultimate on day one."

While the leaks remain unconfirmed, industry commentators note that the details match broader operational shifts initiated under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Since taking the role in February 2026, Sharma has worked to reshape the service, previously reducing prices while removing new Call of Duty releases from launch-day inclusion on Game Pass.

Commenting on the long-term vision for the ecosystem, Sharma said that "long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around."

Sharma has also stated an intent to "fortify" the service through "clear differentiation and sustainable economics."

Microsoft has already begun testing ad-supported cloud streaming access and announced upcoming limits on monthly streaming usage. The company has also experimented with staggered launch windows or "windowing" for major franchises like Call of Duty, making titles available on the subscription service at later dates rather than at launch, while continuing day-one releases for titles such as Gears of War: E-Day and Fable.

Furthermore, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters indicated that leadership at both companies have "kicked around ideas" for potential future subscription bundles, adding that he "wouldn’t eliminate any possibilities."
