DCU’s ‘Supergirl’ Taps New Composer Just Months Before Launch

DCU’s ‘Supergirl’ Taps New Composer Just Months Before Launch

A Third Note: DCU’s ‘Supergirl’ Taps New Composer Just Months Before Launch

BURBANK, CA — The "rebel cousin" of the Man of Steel is finding a new rhythm, though not without some last-minute backstage shuffling. DC Studios has confirmed that its upcoming blockbuster Supergirl has undergone a significant creative change, with Claudia Sarne (The Book of Eli, Triple 9) officially taking over as the film's composer.

The move, first noticed by eagle-eyed fans in a Warner Bros. press release on Wednesday 11th March makes Sarne the third composer to be attached to the project in as many months. She replaces Tom Holkenborg (better known as Junkie XL), who had himself recently stepped in for the film's original choice, Game of Thrones maestro Ramin Djawadi.

Finetuning the Interstellar Tone

While a composer swap three months before a 26th June release might typically sound alarm bells, industry insiders suggest the shift is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s "quality-first" mandate for the new DC Universe.

The film, directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya), is described as a "True Grit-style space western" that follows Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El on a gritty, revenge-fueled journey across the stars. Sources close to the production indicate that as the final edit of the film took shape, the creative team felt Sarne’s signature "industrial and atmospheric" sound was a better fit for the movie’s darker, more visceral tone than Holkenborg’s high-octane orchestral style.

“James [Gunn] has been very clear that they won't settle for 'good enough,'” a studio source noted. “If the music doesn't elevate the emotional stakes of Kara’s journey, they’ll keep searching until it does. Claudia brings a raw edge that matches Milly’s performance perfectly.”

The "Supergirl" Evolution

The musical shake-up is just the latest in a series of refinements for the project. Since its inception, the film has seen:

  • A Title Change: Shortened from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to simply Supergirl to avoid the "subtitle fatigue" Gunn has frequently criticized.

  • A Harder Edge: The story, adapted by Ana Nogueira, has been described by Gillespie as a departure from the "bright and hopeful" tone of David Corenswet’s Superman, leaning instead into Kara’s trauma as a survivor of Krypton’s destruction.

The Road to June

Despite the revolving door in the music department, the film’s release remains firmly on track. Milly Alcock, who made a brief but widely praised cameo in 2025's Superman, is currently in the middle of a massive global press tour.

Marketing for the film shifted into high gear this week with a new teaser featuring Jason Momoa’s Lobo roaring into frame on a space motorcycle, confirming the "Main Man" will serve as a chaotic foil to Supergirl’s "murderous quest for revenge."

With Sarne now at the helm of the score, the final pieces of the DCU's second cinematic entry are falling into place. Fans will get to hear the results when the Maiden of Might takes flight in theaters and IMAX on 26th June 2026.
