“Venture Beyond the Dark Side”: Lucasfilm Sets Sights on Star Wars Horror Novel and Film
BURBANK, CA — The galaxy far, far away is about to get significantly darker. Following years of "spooky" episodes and niche zombie novels, Lucasfilm has officially confirmed a coordinated push into the horror genre, beginning with a new canonical novel slated for late 2026 and reports of a live-action feature film to follow.
The news marks a major tonal pivot for the franchise, which has historically leaned into the "space opera" and "western" archetypes. Now, under the leadership of Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, the studio appears ready to embrace the supernatural terror lurking in the shadows of the Force.
The Harbinger: An Untitled Horror Novel
The "Year of Horror" officially kicks off on 1st September 2026, with the release of an untitled middle-grade horror novel by Kiersten White (Star Wars: Padawan). While the book is aimed at the "Goosebumps" demographic (ages 8–12), Lucasfilm is billing it as a "core franchise milestone" rather than a mere spin-off.
“Venture beyond the dark side in this chilling horror-themed novel,” the official publisher listing reads. “A young girl finds herself haunted by an enigmatic evil presence and must unravel its origins while confronting her own deepest fears.”
Industry insiders suggest the book will serve as a "litmus test" for the brand's new genre initiative, which also includes the upcoming YA romance novel Eyes Like Stars by Ashley Poston.
From the Page to the Big Screen
The literary launch appears to be the first phase of a larger multimedia strategy. During a recent interview, Andor creator Tony Gilroy hinted that a live-action horror project is currently in the works at Lucasfilm. While Gilroy initially joked about "Star Wars sitcoms" and "Star Wars horror movies," he recently confirmed to Business Insider that a darker, genre-bending project is indeed "in the hopper."
Rumors regarding the film project include:
-
The "Lovecraftian" Influence: Sources suggest the film may lean into "cosmic horror," focusing on the ancient, eldritch origins of the Sith.
-
The Director Shortlist: Fans have noted that horror auteur Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) has long expressed interest in a "rated-R Vader project," though Lucasfilm has not yet confirmed a director.
-
The Format: It remains unclear if the project will be a standalone theatrical feature or a "Special Presentation" for the newly merged HBO Max/Paramount+ platform.
A Legacy of Fright
While this is the first "sustained horror narrative" for the Disney era, Star Wars has a long history with the macabre. From the Sisters of Dathomir and the Brain Worms of The Clone Wars to Joe Schreiber’s 2009 cult-classic zombie novel Death Troopers, the elements have always been there.
“The Force is a corrupting power that feeds on fear,” says cultural critic Jonas Reichel. “Showing characters descend into madness through the Force itself—not just through monsters, but through their own minds—is a natural evolution for a mature Star Wars audience.”
The 2026-2027 Roadmap
The horror initiative joins a packed slate of theatrical and streaming releases:
-
6th April 2026: Maul — Shadow Lord (Animated Series)
-
22nd May 2026: The Mandalorian & Grogu (Theatrical Film)
-
1st September 2026: Untitled Horror Novel by Kiersten White
-
28th May 2027: Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling
As the sun sets on the High Republic era of publishing, Lucasfilm is betting that the next great frontier for the Jedi isn't just outer space—it's the things that go bump in the vacuum of it.
