The Obamas’ Next Act: Higher Ground Makes Bold Broadway Debut with ‘Proof’ Revival

NEW YORK, NY — They have conquered the White House, the bestseller list, and the Academy Awards. Now, Barack and Michelle Obama are setting their sights on the Great White Way.

In a landmark announcement made Wednesday 11th March, the former President and First Lady confirmed that their production company, Higher Ground, has officially joined the producing team for the upcoming Broadway revival of David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Proof. The move marks the couple’s first foray into theatrical producing, adding a "Tony" to their potential EGOT roadmap.

A Star-Studded Return to the Booth

The revival, which begins previews at the Booth Theatre on 31st March 2026, was already one of the season’s most anticipated tickets. With the Obamas now on board as co-producers alongside Mike Bosner and Hamilton director Thomas Kail, the production has transitioned from a prestige hit to a cultural event.

The production features a powerhouse cast of stage newcomers:

  • Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) makes her Broadway debut as Catherine, a young woman struggling with the legacy of her late father’s genius and mental illness.

  • Don Cheadle (Oppenheimer) makes his highly anticipated Broadway debut as Robert, Catherine's brilliant but troubled father.

  • Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Jin Ha (Pachinko) round out the elite ensemble.

“Exactly the Kind of Story We Champion”

In a joint statement, the Obamas expressed that the themes of Proof, which explores the intersection of brilliance, family inheritance, and the burden of legacy, aligned perfectly with Higher Ground’s mission.

Proof is a landmark play that asks profound questions about what we inherit from the people we love most,” the Obamas said. “To bring this story back to Broadway with such an extraordinary team is a privilege. It is exactly the kind of narrative Higher Ground was built to champion.”

The venture follows a successful streak for Higher Ground in other mediums, including an Oscar for the documentary American Factory and several Emmy wins for their work in television and film, such as the recent Netflix thriller Leave the World Behind.

The EGOT Watch

Industry insiders were quick to note that the move places the Obamas in a prime position for a Tony Award nomination for Best Revival of a Play. Barack Obama already holds two Grammys and five Emmys, while Michelle has earned both a Grammy and an Emmy nomination. A Tony win would leave the couple needing only an Oscar (in a category where they are personally credited as producers) to complete the rarest grand slam in show business.

“The Obamas don't just put their name on things for vanity,” said one Broadway veteran. “They are active curators. Bringing their brand to a mathematical drama starring Ayo Edebiri is a savvy move that bridges the gap between traditional theater-goers and a younger, diverse audience.”

Opening Night Countdown

The strictly limited 16-week engagement officially opens on 16th April 2026. Tickets are already reportedly surging on the secondary market following the news of the Obamas’ involvement.

While the former First Couple is known for being frequent Broadway attendees, famously giving Hamilton its first major boost during their time in office, this represents a significant shift from the audience to the boardroom. If the "Obama Touch" holds true on 45th Street, Proof may well be the definitive hit of the 2026 season.
