‘Uncertain Future’: Jake Paul Admits Retirement a ‘Real Possibility’ Following Brutal Joshua Injury
MIAMI — The high-octane boxing career of Jake ‘The Problem Child’ Paul may have reached a premature and painful conclusion. In a sobering update on Tuesday 12th May, the 29-year-old YouTuber-turned-prizefighter admitted that he may never be medically cleared to compete again following severe complications from a broken jaw.
The injury was sustained during his high-profile heavyweight clash with former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua in December 2025. Paul, who was stopped in the sixth round of the Miami showpiece, suffered a jaw fractured in two places, a wound so severe it required the surgical insertion of titanium plates to rebuild his face.
The ‘Titanium’ Struggle
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show this week, Paul revealed that while he has remained active in the gym with non-contact mitt work, he is currently awaiting a series of "deciding" scans to determine if his bone structure can ever again withstand the impact of professional punches.
“I’m getting some new scans in a couple of days to get an update on the healing,” Paul told Helwani. “I think I’ll be able to get a more accurate timeframe, or… can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm of possibility. It just depends on how the bone heals.”
Paul further disclosed that the injury resulted in the loss of a back tooth, which requires a dental implant, a procedure that further complicates his timeline for a return to sparring.
‘Not Done’ vs. Medical Reality
Despite the mounting medical evidence, Paul remains defiant about his desire to continue. The fighter, who holds a professional record of 12-2, insisted that he "can feel it in his soul" that he has more fights left. However, he admitted that those closest to him, including his primary physician, have advised him to walk away.
“My doctor definitely doesn’t want me to fight,” Paul admitted. “Those doubts have definitely come up, but I’m not done. I have unfinished business.”
Jake Paul – The Injury Fallout
| Event | Detail | Status |
| The Injury | Double jaw fracture & missing tooth. | Dec 2025 (vs. Anthony Joshua) |
| The Surgery | Two titanium plates fitted for stability. | Completed Jan 2026 |
| Current Training | Shadowboxing & mitt work only. | No contact sparring allowed. |
| Future Outlook | Retirement "in the realm of possibility." | Awaiting May 2026 Scans. |
A $92 Million Legacy?
The news of Paul’s potential retirement comes just as reports suggest his bout with Joshua was one of the most lucrative in boxing history, allegedly netting the American over $90 million (£72 million).
If this marks the end, Paul exits the sport as a divisive but undeniable titan of the "influencer boxing" era. Having defeated legends like Mike Tyson and Anderson Silva, his loss to Joshua represented his first foray into the elite heavyweight tier, a jump that may have come at a permanent physical cost.
The Verdict
For now, the boxing world must wait for the results of this week's scans. If the titanium plates have failed to integrate or if the bone density remains insufficient, the "Problem Child" will be forced to trade his gloves for a permanent seat at the promotion table with his company, Most Valuable Promotions.
As Anthony Joshua prepares for a summer return in Saudi Arabia, his last opponent faces a far more daunting fight: the battle to simply get back in the ring.
