Medical experts are raising the alarm over mounting evidence linking youth vaping to a wide range of physical and mental health issues, urging authorities to implement stricter limits on product availability.
A comprehensive review conducted by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), which analyzed 81 published studies and was published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, concluded that e-cigarettes are far from benign. Co-author Professor Will Carroll warned that "vaping should not be seen as a harmless part of growing up."
The Impact of Vaping on Health
The Toll on Physical and Mental Health: Findings show links to respiratory problems like coughing and wheezing, dental issues, poor sleep, and mental health struggles including anxiety, depression, and panic disorder.
The Prenatal Risks: The research also identified adverse impacts on babies whose mothers vaped during pregnancy, including abnormal reflexes and lower motor maturity.
The Prevalence of Vaping in Young People: Polling conducted for the charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) indicates that nearly one in 5 young people aged 11 to 17 in Britain have tried vaping.
Dr. Mike McKean, the RCPCH's vice-president for policy, emphasized that "vaping is still a relatively new product, and there is much we do not yet know about its long-term impact on children and young people but a clear and concerning picture is emerging."
Calls for Tighter Regulation
While the UK government has already moved to ban single-use vapes and plans to outlaw advertising and sponsorship next year, doctors argue more needs to be done. Current government consultations propose plain packaging, hidden retail displays, and simplified flavor descriptions like "apple" or "cola" under the Tobacco and Vapes Act.
However, medical professionals argue that restricting labels is insufficient. Professor Carroll stressed that "we must act to make vaping less attractive and accessible to children," calling on officials to ban specific flavor types outright rather than just altering their marketing descriptions.
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson responded to the findings by stating that "children should never vape and this evidence shows just some of the risks associated." Local leaders, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, are also pushing for local council planning powers to curb the spread of specialized vape shops on British high streets.
