‘Caked Up like a Bakery’: Groundbreaking ‘Shrek 5’ Trailer Unveils Zendaya, Sleek Animation Style and a Very Wild Gingerbread Man

LOS ANGELES — Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have shattered the internet by dropping the highly anticipated first teaser trailer for Shrek 5, offering a staggering first look at the franchise's total visual makeover and an influx of massive Hollywood star power (trailer below).

The three-minute teaser marks the mainline franchise's grand return to cinemas for the first time in 17 years, following 2010’s Shrek Forever After.

While legacy icons Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) are firmly locked in to reprise their era-defining roles, the trailer formally introduces global superstar Zendaya to the swamp. The Dune actress joins the billing alongside an updated, sleek animation style that has already sparked fierce debate across the global animation community.

Donkey Orders a Visual Makeover

The trailer opens with a deliberate wave of nostalgia, framed through the traditional fairy-tale storybook illustrations that kicked off the original 2001 film.

However, the trip down memory lane is swiftly hijacked by Donkey, who interrupts the narrator to declare that it is time for a "makeover." The screen then bursts into the franchise's brand-new, highly modernised animation style.

The updated aesthetic heavily channels the painterly, hyper-dynamic visual language pioneered by DreamWorks in 2022's Oscar-nominated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. While the sleeker look, fluid textures, and vibrant lighting have left the majority of fans thoroughly hypnotised, the sudden aesthetic evolution has triggered intense debate on platform X, with several purists drawing nervous comparisons to the initial backlash faced by Sonic the Hedgehog back in 2019.

A New Generation of Ogres

The narrative core of the sequel revolves around a trip to a brand-new kingdom, Further, Further Away, with Shrek and Fiona’s now-grown-up triplets leading the charge.

The casting of the ogre children represents a massive coup for DreamWorks. Zendaya officially anchors the secondary cast as Shrek and Fiona's headstrong daughter, Felicia. Her brothers, Fergus and Farkle, have been filled by Saturday Night Live breakout comedian Marcello Hernández and Superman star Skyler Gisondo.

The Casting Architecture of Shrek 5

Roster Character Voice Acting Talent Overarching Character Arc / Status
Shrek Mike Myers The grumpy patriarch, desperately defending his quiet peace
Donkey Eddie Murphy The hyperactive sidekick, orchestrating chaotic musical numbers
Princess Fiona Cameron Diaz The fierce matriarch, ready for a multi-kingdom road trip
Felicia Zendaya Shrek’s independent, sharp-witted ogre daughter
Fergus & Farkle Marcello Hernández & Skyler Gisondo Shrek's energetic, trouble-making twin ogre sons

The "Caked Up" Internet Sensation

True to the franchise's subversive roots, the trailer heavily leans into absurdist, pop-culture-driven adult humour. In one standout parody sequence, the family encounters a sinister, lurking alleyway snowman who serves as a dark, highly unsettling caricature of Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, asking a terrified Donkey: "You wanna date a snowman?"

However, it is the return of the Gingerbread Man (voiced by franchise veteran and co-director Conrad Vernon) that has completely stolen the digital spotlight.

In a wild, highly suggestive sequence that has already birthed thousands of viral internet memes, "Gingy" proudly shows off a pair of brand-new gumdrop buttons attached to his backside, turning to the camera to scream that he is officially “caked up like a friggin’ bakery!”

The frantic teaser concludes with Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the boys locked inside a medieval jail cell. Completely ignoring their criminal predicament, Donkey launches into highly irritating, impromptu acoustic renditions of Player’s “Baby Come Back” and The Police’s “Roxanne” to the visible, vein-popping frustration of a silent Shrek.

The Verdict

Co-directed by franchise veterans Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2) and Walt Dohrn (Trolls), Shrek 5 successfully balances massive generational nostalgia with a risky, boundary-pushing visual evolution. Reviving a multi-billion-pound franchise after nearly two decades is a monumental corporate gamble, but by infusing the cast with modern titans like Zendaya and leaning heavily into the irreverent, slightly edgy humour that defined the early 2000s, DreamWorks looks set to avoid a hollow cash-grab. It will be a lengthy wait for the green powerhouse to land in theatres on 30th June 2027, but the trailer proves that the king of the swamp hasn't lost an ounce of his bite.
