Desert Fever Returns: Dune: Part Three IMAX 70mm Shows Sell Out Eight Months Before Release

LOS ANGELES — The spice is already flowing, and so is the cash. In an unprecedented show of fan fervor, Warner Bros. and IMAX announced today that the first wave of tickets for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three has nearly sold out across the globe, a staggering eight months before the film's scheduled debut on 18th December 2026.

The tickets, which went on sale Monday evening (6th April), were exclusively for IMAX 70mm screenings, the director’s preferred format for the conclusion of his epic trilogy. Within minutes of the surprise drop, major hubs including New York’s AMC Lincoln Square, London’s BFI IMAX, and Los Angeles’ Universal Cinema AMC reported near-total sell-outs for opening weekend showtimes.

The ‘Dunesday’ Phenomenon

The rapid sell-out marks a significant victory for Warner Bros. in what is being dubbed the "Battle for Dunesday." The film is currently set for a high-stakes box office clash with Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on the same day. By locking in premium large-format screens and selling tickets nearly a year in advance, Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic has secured a strategic foothold in the most lucrative theaters.

“This isn't just a movie release; it’s a cultural pilgrimage,” said box office analyst Marcus Thorne. “By offering limited-edition collectible filmstrips for these early 70mm screenings, IMAX has turned a standard ticket purchase into a high-stakes event for collectors.”

Scalpers and ‘Golden Tickets’

The scarcity of the 70mm format—which is available in fewer than 20 theaters across North America—has already triggered a predatory secondary market. On eBay and specialized resale sites, individual tickets for opening night in Dallas and San Francisco are reportedly fetching as much as $1,000.

A New Chapter: 17 Years Later

Based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, the third installment features a massive narrative leap. Villeneuve recently confirmed that the film will take place 17 years after the events of Part Two, shifting the focus from a revolutionary war to the heavy burden of Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) galactic empire.

The film stars a returning ensemble including Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy, alongside newcomers Robert Pattinson, playing a transformed Scytale and Jason Momoa, whose mysterious return as a "ghola" has been the subject of intense fan speculation since the first teaser trailer debuted in March.

“The Most Immersive Format”

Villeneuve, a staunch defender of the theatrical experience, expanded his use of analog film for this final chapter. While the previous films used a mix of digital and film, Part Three was shot extensively on IMAX film cameras to capture the "brutality and scale" of the Holy War.

“Cinema is meant to be a shared experience that makes you travel,” Villeneuve told Radio Times shortly after the sales went live. “IMAX 70mm is the best camera in the world... it is quite unmatchable.”

Warner Bros. has urged fans who missed the first wave to sign up for alerts at https://www.google.com/search?q=IMAX.com/Dune70mm, as additional showtimes are expected to be added later this year once the full holiday schedule is finalized. For now, the message to filmgoers is clear: if you want to see the end of the Atreides saga on the big screen, you’d better start planning your trip to the desert now.
