The Five-Year Wait: Why Marvel’s Highly Anticipated Shang-Chi 2 Is Taking So Long
LOS FORD — It has been nearly five years since Simu Liu first shattered box office expectations, brought breathtaking martial arts choreography to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and established Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as a modern superhero triumph.
Yet, half a decade later, fans are still left asking the same question: Where is the sequel?
This week, director Destin Daniel Cretton broke the silence during an appearance on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, offering a definitive update that finally sheds light on the creative hurdles, structural pivots, and scheduling conflicts that have kept Shang-Chi 2 locked in development limbo.
A Post-Pandemic Reality Check
While Shang-Chi was a massive critical and commercial hit upon its September 2021 release, standing out as one of the few completely original, non-sequel success stories of its release window, Cretton admitted that the film's timing created a complicated legacy.
Launching during the latter stages of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted international theatrical distribution and skewed traditional box office structures. While Hollywood eagerly greenlit a sequel, the operational fallout from that era disrupted Marvel’s long-term scheduling pipeline.
However, the real delay stems from a combination of Cretton’s own packed schedule and a massive behind-the-scenes creative restructuring at Marvel Studios.
The Marvel Musical Chairs
In the years following Shang-Chi, Cretton became one of Marvel’s most trusted creative generals, a status that ironically drew him away from his own franchise.
-
The Disney+ Detours: Cretton was tasked with executive producing and directing the live-action Wonder Man series for Disney+.
-
The Crossover Shuffle: He was originally attached to direct the fifth Avengers film back when it was structured around the villain Kang the Conqueror. When Marvel fired actor Jonathan Majors and entirely reframed the Multiverse Saga toward Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, the overarching narrative map changed overnight.
-
The Spidey Priority: Crucially, Cretton was recently handed the keys to Spider-Man 4, a high-priority collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios. With Tom Holland’s web-slinger fast-tracked for a major theatrical release, Shang-Chi 2 was once again forced to wait its turn.
"Honouring the Reception"
Despite the long wait, Cretton reassured anxious fans that the project is very much alive, progressing in a way that prioritises quality over a rushed release date.
"We're working on it," Cretton confirmed. "The first film's reception was incredible, and we want to honour that. It's evolving in a way we're excited about. I can't say specifics, but the emotional core is very important to us."
Industry insiders suggest that the script is currently being carefully recalibrated to reflect the new direction of Marvel's Phase 6 and Phase 7.
When Will Shang-Chi Return?
Fans won't have to wait for a standalone sequel to see Simu Liu back in action. The actor is already confirmed to reprise his martial arts hero in the upcoming event film Avengers: Doomsday, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars.
| Shang-Chi Timeline | Status / Release Window |
| Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Released: September 2021 |
| Avengers: Doomsday | Upcoming Crossover Appearance |
| Shang-Chi 2 (Untitled Sequel) | Estimated Production Start: Late 2026 / 2027 |
With Marvel shifting away from its previous "quantity over quality" streaming flood and returning to a slower, more deliberate theatrical release model, Shang-Chi 2 is currently projected to target an absolute earliest production start date of late 2026.
While the half-decade wait has tested the patience of the fandom, Cretton’s update proves that Marvel is treating the Master of Kung Fu not as a forgotten relic, but as a pillar of the MCU’s cinematic future worth getting exactly right.
