Spotify Adds Verified Badges For Human Artists

Spotify Adds Verified Badges For Human Artists

In an effort to keep music streaming authentic, Spotify is rolling out a "Verified by Spotify" badge to help listeners tell the difference between human musicians and AI-generated content. The new checkmark, which appears in green next to artist names, will act as a seal of authenticity for performers who meet specific "human" criteria.

To earn the badge, artists must show a real-world presence that AI can't easily fake. Spotify will look for:

  • Linked social media accounts
  • Consistent listener engagement over time
  • Physical markers like merchandise and concert dates

The streaming giant estimates that over 99% of the artists people actively search for, which covers hundreds of thousands of musicians, will be verified at launch.

The move comes as the industry grapples with an explosion of AI-generated music. A competing platform, Deezer, recently revealed that 44% of all new content uploaded to their site every day is made by AI. Major labels are also pushing back, with Sony Music recently requesting the removal of over 135,000 AI-produced tracks that mimicked its artists across several streaming services.

Spotify itself has faced controversy over "phantom" bands. In 2025, a project called The Velvet Sundown amassed 850,000 monthly listeners before fans realized the group had no record of ever performing live or giving interviews. Their profile now carries a disclaimer identifying them as a "synthetic music project."

Beyond the verification badge, Spotify is introducing a "nutritional label" style section on all artist profiles. This beta feature will highlight artists career milestones and touring activity, giving fans a quick way to gauge an artist's track record, even if they haven't secured a badge yet.

While some critics, like creators' rights campaigner Ed Newton-Rex, worry that the new system might put independent artists who don't tour or sell merch at a disadvantage as they will be harder to verify, Spotify says the program will evolve. As the company stated in a blog post, “In the AI era, it’s more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to.”
