Web-Slinger Smashes Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Web-Slings to Historic $927m Global Opening

LONDON — Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have shattered box office records across the globe as Spider-Man: Brand New Day stormed into cinemas, securing a breath-taking $927 million (£725 million) worldwide launch across its opening weekend.

The staggering figure represents the second-largest global opening in cinematic history, surpassed only by 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion).

In North America, the fourth standalone outing for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker netted an estimated $355 million (£278 million) across 4,487 locations. The figure lands just shy of Endgame’s all-time domestic record of $357.1 million, while comfortably surpassing 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million) to deliver the biggest debut in Sony Pictures' history.

Record-Breaking Friday and Critical Acclaim

Although narrowly missing out on the three-day weekend record, Brand New Day established an absolute high-water mark for single-day box office takings.

On Friday, the film grossed a monumental $169.3 million (£132.5 million) in North America alone, including Thursday previews officially eclipsing Endgame’s $157.4 million to take the crown for the highest opening day of all time.

International markets added a further $572 million (£447 million) to the tally, led by a colossal $121 million (£95 million) bow in China and a market-leading £23.8 million debut across the UK and Ireland.

The financial triumph comes alongside glowing reception from critics and cinema-goers alike. The feature holds a 90 per cent critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an glowing 98 per cent audience score and an 'A' grade on CinemaScore.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day picks up in the aftermath of No Way Home, following Peter Parker as he navigates a solitary life in New York City after the world was magically made to forget his identity.

Alongside Holland and Zendaya, the ensemble cast features Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle / The Punisher, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan / Scorpion, and Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as Bruce Banner / The Hulk.
