Ryan Gosling Expresses Disappointment Over Lack of Best Director and Best Actress Nominations For Gerwig and Robbie
In a surprising turn of events, the Oscar nominations have left Barbie director Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie overlooked for Best Director and Best Actress, much to the disappointment of their co-star, Ryan Gosling.
Though Gosling is "honoured" for the best supporting actor nomination as Ken, he expressed dissatisfaction with the Academy's choices, stating, "There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film."
Barbie, the highest-grossing film of 2023, received eight nominations, including best picture. Robbie was recognized as a producer in the best picture category, while Gerwig secured a nomination for best adapted screenplay alongside her husband Noah Baumbach.
Despite the disappointment, Gosling expressed happiness for America Ferrera, who received a surprise nomination for best supporting actress. Ferrera, in turn, echoed Gosling's sentiments in a statement to CBS News, saying, "Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made history and raised the bar with Barbie. The cultural and industry impact they've achieved will be felt for generations."
Social media has seen varied responses, with some noting irony in Ken's nomination over Barbie in a film centred around feminism and the patriarchy. Others defended the Academy's choices, acknowledging the film's commercial success while recognizing higher-quality films in its place.
The Oscars ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on March 10th in Los Angeles, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcomes of the nominations and the potential impact on the industry.
