‘Ooh, Netflix Friends!’: Netflix Confirms The Inbetweeners 3 as Filming Kicks Off with Original Cast
LONDON — Twelve years after their last theatrical outing, the UK’s most hopelessly awkward comedy quartet are officially back in business. Streaming giant Netflix has formally confirmed that principal photography is underway on The Inbetweeners 3, reuniting the original core cast for a brand-new feature film.
The announcement was unveiled via a teaser clip across Netflix UK social media platforms on Monday morning, bearing the cheekily familiar caption: "Ooh, Netflix friends. THE INBETWEENERS 3. Now filming".
The promotional footage confirms the full return of Simon Bird (Will McKenzie), James Buckley (Jay Cartwright), Blake Harrison (Neil Sutherland), and Joe Thomas (Simon Cooper) as they pile into their iconic, yellow 1996 Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii edition.
The Hawaiian Yellow Banger Rides Again
The short teaser opens with the four former Rudge Park Comprehensive schoolmates gathering at a storage unit before attempting to squeeze back into the infamous hatchback—complete with its mismatched red passenger door.
After a brief struggle to turn the key, the engine sputters to life, allowing the group to drive off into the distance as a bold "3" flashes across the car's rear windscreen.
The new film marks the first official continuation of the franchise since 2014’s The Inbetweeners 2, which smashed UK box office records to become the highest-grossing comedy opening weekend in British cinema history.
"It's been super-fun hanging out with our friends again," original creators and directors Damon Beesley and Iain Morris said in a joint statement alongside the production reveal. "We're going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans."
A Massive Revival for the Streaming Era
Development on the project gained momentum after the original E4 television series, which ran for three critically acclaimed series between 2008 and 2010, experienced a massive second wave of global popularity on Netflix.
While plot details remain closely guarded by Netflix and production partners Fudge Park Productions and Banijay UK, the movie is expected to follow the four friends navigating the absurdities of mid-30s adulthood, career stumbles, and domestic domesticity.
Industry reports indicate that negotiations are also ongoing to bring back several secondary fan-favourite cast members, including Emily Atack as Charlotte Hinchcliffe and Greg Davies as the merciless headmaster Mr Gilbert.
