Oppenheimer Dominates 2024 BAFTA Film Awards

In a star-studded ceremony at The Royal Festival Hall in London hosted by Doctor Who star David Tennant, the winners of the 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards were revealed. Oppenheimer emerged as the big winner of the night, clinching an impressive seven BAFTAs, including Best Film, Director for Christopher Nolan, and Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy. The film also secured accolades for Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.

 

Poor Things followed closely, earning five BAFTAs, with Emma Stone winning Leading Actress. The film also received recognition for Costume, Make Up & Hair, Production Design, and Special Visual Effects. The Zone of Interest secured three BAFTAs, triumphing in categories such as Outstanding British Film, Film Not in the English Language, and Sound.

 

Among the notable winners, Da’Vine Joy Randolph from The Holdovers received the BAFTA for Supporting Actress, and Anatomy of a Fall was honoured with the Original Screenplay award. American Fiction took home the Adapted Screenplay award, while Earth Mama was recognized for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. The documentary category saw 20 Days in Mariupol emerge victorious, with The Boy and the Heron claiming the Animated Film award.

 

A historic moment unfolded as The Zone of Interest became the first film to win both Outstanding British Film and Film Not in the English Language. The evening also celebrated Mia McKenna-Bruce, who won the EE Rising Star Award, the only category voted for by the public. Additionally, Samantha Morton received the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship, the highest honour acknowledging her exceptional contribution to film and television. The ceremony featured performances by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Hannah Waddingham, making it a memorable night for the film industry.
