‘Heal the World’ of Box Office: Michael Biopic Surges Towards $600m Milestone
HOLLYWOOD — The "King of Pop" is proving his enduring commercial power from beyond the grave. Lionsgate and Universal’s Michael, the sprawling biographical epic directed by Antoine Fuqua, has continued its relentless march across the global box office, officially crossing the $577 million (£462 million) mark as of Monday morning.
Following its history-making third weekend, the film is now within striking distance of the $600 million threshold. Industry analysts suggest the biopic will comfortably surpass that milestone by the end of the week, cementing its status as one of the most successful musical dramas ever produced.
Dominating the Domestic Stage
While the film has faced stiff competition from the newly released The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Mortal Kombat II, it remains a titan in the United States. Having earned $240 million domestically, Michael has officially overtaken Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic in US history.
The film’s performance is even more impressive given its "hold" in the market; despite being in its third week, it saw a relatively small 33% drop in attendance, indicating strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings from a devoted global fanbase.
“This isn't just a movie; it’s a cultural event”, says box office analyst Devanshi Basu. “To maintain this kind of momentum in a crowded summer window speaks to the sheer scale of Michael Jackson’s legacy and Jaafar Jackson’s transformative performance.”
A Global Phenomenon
The international market has been the primary engine for the film’s success, contributing $337 million (58%) of the total haul. The United Kingdom remains one of the strongest territories, with British audiences contributing over £25 million ($31.3 million) to date.
Notably, the film has yet to open in two critical markets: Japan and South Korea. Given Jackson’s historic popularity in the Asia-Pacific region, experts predict these upcoming releases could propel the film towards an ultimate lifetime gross of $800 million.
The Top 5 Global Film Hits of 2026 (to date)
| Rank | Film | Worldwide Gross | Weeks in Release |
| 1 | The Super Mario Galaxy Movie | $941.2 Million | 6 |
| 2 | Project Hail Mary | $655.7 Million | 7 |
| 3 | Pegasus 3 | $649.8 Million | 4 |
| 4 | Michael | $577.3 Million | 3 |
| 5 | The Devil Wears Prada 2 | $433.2 Million | 2 |
Profitability and Mixed Reviews
Financially, Michael is already a significant win for the studios. With a reported production budget of $155 million, inflated by extensive reshoots to overhaul the narrative's approach to the singer’s legal controversies, the film has cleared the traditional "2.5x budget" rule for profitability.
However, the road to $600 million hasn't been without criticism. While critics have almost universally praised Jaafar Jackson for "nailing the voice and the soul" of his uncle, many have labelled the script "sanitised," accusing the filmmakers of glossing over the more turbulent chapters of Jackson’s life.
The Verdict
Despite the critical divide, the numbers don't lie. By the time Michael finishes its theatrical run, it will likely stand as the second most successful music biopic of all time, trailing only Bohemian Rhapsody’s $903 million.
As the film moves into its fourth week, the question is no longer if it will be a hit, but just how high the King of Pop can climb. With the Japan premiere looming, the thriller isn't over yet.
