King of the Box Office: Michael Biopic Moonwalks Past $400 Million Milestone

LOS ANGELES — The King of Pop is officially the King of the Box Office. Antoine Fuqua’s sprawling biopic Michael has defied critical cynicism to become a global juggernaut, officially crossing the $400 million (£318 million) mark in just its second weekend of release.

As of Sunday evening, the film starring Jaafar Jackson in a transformative turn as his late uncle, has reached a staggering worldwide total of $423.9 million. The figures cement its status as a commercial phenomenon, unseating Elvis to become the second-highest-grossing musical biopic of all time in North America, trailing only the $911 million haul of Bohemian Rhapsody.

A Global Thriller

The film's "moonwalk" to the top has been propelled by massive international support. While the US domestic market contributed a robust $183.8 million, international territories accounted for over 56% of the total revenue.

The United Kingdom has emerged as one of the film’s strongest strongholds, delivering $15.6 million (£12.4 million) to date. Industry analysts suggest that Jackson’s enduring legacy in Europe and Asia is providing the "legs" necessary for the film to challenge the elusive $800 million ceiling.

“People showed up and they showed their love,” legendary director Spike Lee told CNN this morning, defending the film against critics who have panned it as "sanitised." “You’re critiquing the film on something you want in, but it doesn't work in the timeline. The audience knows what they like.”

Critics vs. The Public: A Great Divide

The film's financial success stands in stark contrast to its reception by the press. While critics have handed the film a lukewarm 39% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have responded with a near-perfect 97% "Verified Hot" score.

This "critical disconnect" has done little to slow the film's momentum. In its second Friday, Michael earned $14.4 million in North America, narrowly edging out the second-week performance of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

The Biopic Heavyweights – Global Standings

Film Global Box Office (Total) Status
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) $911 Million All-Time Record Holder
Michael (2026) $423.9 Million Active – 2nd Weekend
Oppenheimer (2023) $975 Million (Historical Biopic)
Elvis (2022) $288 Million Surpassed by Michael
Straight Outta Compton (2015) $201 Million Surpassed by Michael

The Sequel is ‘Confirmed’

The film’s unprecedented opening weekend of $217 million has already convinced Lionsgate to double down on the Jackson estate. Lionsgate Chairman Adam Fogelson confirmed on Sunday that a sequel is officially in development.

Director Antoine Fuqua reportedly has enough "vault footage" from the initial production to anchor a second film, which will likely cover Jackson’s later life and the complexities of the 1990s and early 2000s eras notably absent from the current film’s 1988 cut-off point.

The Verdict

Despite a 44% drop in its second weekend, Michael is outperforming almost every musical biopic in cinematic history. With Japan, one of Jackson’s most loyal markets yet to open until June, the film is perfectly positioned to dominate the summer box office well into the "Dog Days."

As the film continues to pack IMAX and premium format screens, one thing is clear: the public’s appetite for the MJ story remains as "Unbreakable" as ever.
