‘A 10-Year Catharsis’: Guy Ritchie Confirms Long-Awaited Jason Statham Action Thriller Viva La Madness Has Wrapped Filming

LONDON — One of British cinema's most anticipated reunions has quietly crossed the finish line. Filmmaker Guy Ritchie has confirmed that Viva La Madness, his highly anticipated action thriller starring Jason Statham, has officially wrapped principal photography and is well underway in the editing suite.

The news comes as a major milestone for a project that has languished in development for over a decade. Speaking during a promotional press tour for his new theatrical release In the Grey, Ritchie revealed that filming on the star-studded gangster flick actually concluded in mid-April.

A Decade in the Making

The history of Viva La Madness is a testament to Statham’s persistence. The Beekeeper star originally purchased the film rights to J.J. Connolly’s bestselling novel all the way back in 2013, initially envisioning it as a television series. Over the years, the project evolved back into a feature film, finally catching fire when Ritchie signed on to write and direct late last year.

For Ritchie and Statham, who launched their respective careers together with 1998’s seminal Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and 2000's Snatch, the shoot marks their seventh collaboration, but one that carried a unique emotional weight.

“Jason and I have been trying to make that for about 10 years or more, so it was a catharsis making it,” Ritchie told Collider. “We’re only a month or so into the editing, but it’s pretty great fun. It’s true to its title. The clue is in the title, in Viva La Madness. It is mad.”

The Layer Cake Connection

For crime fiction aficionados, the premise of the film carries immense intrigue. Connolly's source novel is the direct literary sequel to his debut book, Layer Cake which was famously adapted into the 2004 cult-classic film directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Daniel Craig.

However, film buffs expecting a direct tie-in to the Craig era will need to adjust their expectations. This new adaptation has been written by Connolly and Ritchie as a entirely standalone story, bypassing any narrative connection to the 2004 movie.

Instead, Statham takes over the mantle of the anonymous, sharp-suited criminal protagonist (simply referred to as 'X'), navigating an increasingly chaotic international drug-running syndicate.

Viva La Madness – Production Snapshot

Category Official Detail
Director / Co-Writer Guy Ritchie
Based on the Novel by J.J. Connolly (Layer Cake)
Lead Star Jason Statham as 'X'
Filming Locations King's Cross (London) and surrounding areas
Production Status Wrapped (April 2026) / Now in Post-Production

A Star-Studded Street Shutdown

Production for the film caused a major stir in the capital earlier this year. In late February, film crews descended upon the streets surrounding King’s Cross, suspending parking and bringing local traffic to a standstill across Judd Street and Cartwright Gardens to film high-octane action sequences.

Passers-by were treated to the sight of Statham reuniting on set with fellow Lock, Stock alumnus Vinnie Jones. The ensemble cast assembled by Ritchie represents a sprawling mix of Hollywood heavyweights and contemporary talent, including:

  • Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting)

  • Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter)

  • Camila Mendes (Riverdale)

  • Ben Foster (Hell or High Water)

  • Babs Olusanmokun (Dune)

The Verdict

Ritchie has earned a reputation in recent years as one of the most prolific and fast-moving directors in Hollywood, frequently wrapping major productions ahead of schedule.

While a formal release date from distributor Black Bear Pictures has yet to be staked out, the fact that the film is already a month into post-production suggests that UK cinema-goers might not have to wait very long to see Statham and Ritchie back in their natural, gritty habitat. If the director's promises hold true, it will be a welcome return to the beautifully chaotic underworld that made them household names.
