Subnautica 2 Shatters Records with 2 Million Sales in 12 Hours

Subnautica 2 Shatters Records with 2 Million Sales in 12 Hours

Subnautica 2 has made a massive splash. Launched into Early Access on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, the underwater survival sequel sold over 2 million copies within its first 12 hours.

The game’s debut was nothing short of explosive, reaching a combined peak of 651,000 concurrent players across PC and Xbox. Steam alone accounted for over 467,000 of those players, which is nearly nine times more players than the original 2018 title's all-time peak. This surge pushed it past genre giants like Rust and the recent pirate hit Windrose, cementing it as one of the most successful survival launches in history.

The road to this success was notoriously rocky. Development began in 2022 but was derailed in July 2025 when publisher Krafton fired the leadership at Unknown Worlds, including CEO Ted Gill. The move sparked a legal war, with the ousted executives alleging that Krafton terminated them to dodge a $250 million performance bonus.

A judge eventually reinstated the team earlier this year, ruling that the dismissals were a tactic to avoid the payout. With the game now moving 2 million units in half a day, the developers appear to be on a direct collision course with those massive sales targets.

Built on Unreal Engine 5, the sequel introduces highly requested features that have driven its viral popularity:

Optional 4-player co-op: A first for the mainline series.

Expanded Narrative: A "meaty" story set in a brand-new alien sea.

Visual Overhaul: Utilizing the latest tech for more immersive depths.

Despite a minor leak just days before launch, the momentum was unstoppable. The game entered its release as the most-wishlisted title on Steam, with over 5 million followers.

Critics have given the Early Access version a warm welcome, with IGN scoring it a 7/10. The review said:

“It’s pretty impressive that wading in the shallow tides of Subnautica 2's early access debut is as fun as it is already, and that should be a great sign of things to come, but I also wouldn’t blame anyone for waiting for these waters to rise a bit before getting their feet wet.”

With a "Very Positive" rating on Steam, Unknown Worlds is now tasked with maintaining this momentum through regular content updates. For now, the studio is celebrating a launch that hauls ass "like hauling ass from a Reaper Leviathan."
