‘Out of This World’: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Rockets Towards $1 Billion Milestone

LOS ANGELES — Nintendo and Illumination’s latest foray into the cosmos is proving to be a gravitational force at the box office. Six weeks after its star-studded debut, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially crossed the $941 million (£745 million) mark, firmly cementing its status as the highest-grossing film of 2026.

The animated sequel, which blasted into cinemas on 1st April, is now in a "dead heat" to join the elusive billion-dollar club by the end of the month. Having already surpassed the lifetime hauls of classics like Pixar’s Finding Nemo, the film’s trajectory suggests it could soon rival the $1.36 billion total of its 2023 predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

A Cosmic Casting Coup

The sequel’s success has been bolstered by a blend of returning favourites and high-profile newcomers. While Chris Pratt (Mario) and Charlie Day (Luigi) returned to lead the plumbers' voyage into deep space, the introduction of Rosalina (voiced by Brie Larson) and a miniaturised, "reforming" Bowser (Jack Black) has resonated with both critics and families alike.

The film’s plot—which sees the brothers leave the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue a kidnapped Princess Peach from Bowser's intergalactic clutches—has been praised for its "spectacular" visual fidelity, particularly its recreation of the gravity-defying physics that made the original 2007 Wii game a masterpiece.

“The appetite for the Mario universe is simply insatiable,” noted industry analyst Sarah Reed. “By taking the story into the 'Galaxy' setting, Nintendo has found a way to maintain the nostalgia for older fans while delivering a visual spectacle that demands a big-screen experience.”

Home Conquest Begins

Even as it continues to dominate the theatrical charts, Universal has wasted no time in preparing for the film's "home-bound" journey. On Thursday, the studio confirmed that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will debut on digital platforms on 19th May 2026, with a physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release following on 16th June.

The home release is set to include over an hour of bonus content, including a "Secret of the Galaxy" featurette dedicated to the hundreds of Easter eggs hidden throughout the film’s various star systems.

Franchise Powerhouses

The combined performance of the two Mario films has now pushed the franchise past $2.3 billion globally, making it one of the top ten highest-grossing animated series in history.

This sustained momentum is expected to fuel Nintendo's broader cinematic ambitions. Rumours of a Legend of Zelda live-action update and a Star Fox spin-off have gained significant traction this week, especially following the surprise cameo of a certain "wingman" in the Galaxy post-credits sequence.

The Verdict

With no major family competition expected until the mid-summer release of Despicable Me 5, Mario and his crew have a clear flight path to the $1 billion threshold. For Nintendo, the sky isn't the limit—the entire galaxy is.
