The stage is officially set for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest grand final in Vienna this Saturday, May 16th, following two intense semi-finals that saw favorites rise and unexpected cameos steal the spotlight. Twenty qualifiers have joined the host nation, Austria, and the financial "Big Four" to round out the 25-act roster competing for the iconic glass microphone.
While the music took center stage, the week was not without political tension. A notable group of countries, including Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland, are absent from this year's competition as they are boycotting the event in protest of Israel’s continued participation.
Israel’s representative, Noam Bettan, secured a spot in the final despite his Tuesday performance of "Michelle" being disrupted by shouts of "stop the genocide" from the crowd. Bettan, who remained focused on the stage, later said:
"The calls were really, really loud. But I focused on the performance. I searched with my eyes for the Israeli flags in the crowd. That strengthened me."
The semi-finals also featured a surprising mix of star power. British icon Boy George joined San Marino’s Senhit for a rendition of "Superstar," though the duo failed to win over voters and were eliminated from the competition. Hollywood’s Will Ferrell also made a cameo, delighting fans with a nod to his 2020 Eurovision film, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
Australia is entering the final with massive momentum. Delta Goodrem, the former Neighbours star and pop powerhouse, has become a betting favorite after a stunning performance of her ballad "Eclipse." Goodrem described the experience to the BBC as "surprisingly beautiful."
"To see people flying the flags for music and being with us has been an awesome thing to see."
Meanwhile, the UK’s entrant, Look Mum No Computer (aka Sam Battle), performed his entry "Eins, Zwei, Drei" for the first time during the second semi-final. His performance, which featured a desk that transformed into a surreal landscape of circuit boards, drew mixed reactions online, with some praising his "energy and personality" while others compared the frantic staging to a student "huffing and puffing around an exam hall."
Broadcaster ORF revealed the official running order for Saturday night, with Denmark set to open the show and host nation Austria closing the festivities.
