Ireland Votes: Local and European Elections

As the nation gears up for the 2024 local and European elections, anticipation rises for the historic election of Limerick's first directly elected mayor. With polling stations set to open across the country, voters prepare to cast their ballots in a crucial exercise of democratic participation.

Voting Details:

From 7 am on Friday, more than 6,500 polling stations will welcome voters, remaining open until 10 pm. The electorate will select 949 councillors from over 2,100 candidates across 31 local authorities. Simultaneously, voters in European constituencies face choices among a multitude of candidates, with only 14 MEPs to represent Ireland.

European Elections Challenge:

In the Midlands North West, Dublin, and Ireland South constituencies, voters confront lengthy 73cm-long ballot papers listing 27 and 23 candidates, respectively. Despite the challenge, the democratic process marches forward, with counting set to commence on Sunday.

Limerick's Mayoral Milestone:

A pivotal moment awaits Limerick, as voters there elect their first directly elected mayor. This third ballot paper adds complexity to the process as candidates vie to lead a council serving nearly 210,000 constituents. The counting for this historic race will commence on Monday, June 10th.

Mayoral Role and Responsibilities:

The elected mayor of Limerick assumes a significant role, wielding a budget of €8 million annually for mayoral projects and initiatives. With a salary exceeding €154,000, the mayor's powers include proposing the council's annual budget and playing a vital role in the five-year Local Development Plan. Additionally, access to Cabinet Ministers ensures representation at the highest levels of governance.

Voter Eligibility and Requirements:

While Irish citizens are eligible to vote in both the European and local elections, non-citizens over 18 residing in the relevant local electoral area can participate in the local elections. However, voters must appear on the register of electors and may be required to present identification, such as a passport or driving license, at polling stations.

Awaiting Election Results:

While local election results may surface over the weekend, the outcomes of the European and Limerick mayoral elections may take additional time to materialize. With democratic processes in motion, the nation stands poised for the unveiling of its elected representatives at both local and European levels.
