According to his family, a fairground worker who died at a seaside carnival will be loved for eternity.

Corrie Lee Stavers, 28, from Sunderland, sustained a fatal head injury at Spanish City in Whitley Bay at around 14:15 BST on Saturday, according to Northumbria Police.

His family said the pain of losing him so suddenly was impossible to put into words. The Health and Safety Executive has been notified, and the funfair – which had been due to take place over the Bank Holiday weekend – will remain closed. Fairground bosses described it as a “tragic accident.”

Specialist officers are supporting Mr Stavers’ next of kin, Northumbria Police confirmed.

“With broken hearts, we share the sad news that our beloved Corrie has died,” his family said in a statement shared through the police.

“He was tragically taken from us in an accident while riding a fairground ride. None of us was prepared for this, and the agony of losing him so suddenly is impossible to describe. Our lives will never be the same without him. His memory will live on in our hearts forever. We love you forever, Corrie, and miss you more than words can ever say.”

Turners Funfairs said in a Facebook post that they were “heartbroken” at the loss of one of their much-loved colleagues following the tragic accident.

“Our staff are like a family, and we are all deeply affected by this loss,” the statement continued. “Spanish City Funfair will remain closed this weekend as a mark of respect, while we take the time to grieve together.”

The North East Ambulance Service said it had dispatched an emergency ambulance and a helicopter. Mr Stavers received initial assistance from an off-duty medic until crews arrived. However, despite the best efforts of medical staff, police confirmed that he sadly died a short time later.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Northumbria Police.
