Isle of Wight Helicopter Crash Leaves One Injured

A helicopter has crashed in a field on the Isle of Wight, with one person airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was called to the scene near Shanklin at about 09:24 BST. Shanklin Road has been closed.

Southampton and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance confirmed that it treated a patient at the scene before airlifting them to the Major Trauma Centre at University Hospital Southampton.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Newport, Ventnor and Shanklin were called after reports of a light aircraft crash.

South Central Ambulance Service said its response included one double-crewed ambulance, an emergency response paramedic, a specialist paramedic, and the operational commander. Four further double-crewed ambulances and a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle also attended.

It is not yet known whether anyone else was injured.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed that a team has been deployed to begin an investigation.

Isle of Wight Conservative MP Bob Seely urged people to avoid the area. “The helicopter came down in a very rural location, surrounded by fields and a road running between Shanklin and Sandown in the east, and Ventnor in the south,” he said. “It is not in a densely populated area, but it does appear to be very close to a main road.”
